We folks here in the mid country and up north chuckle at these things, but we know we have to stock up on those things ahead of time. In fact, I keep a good supply of toilet paper at all times and do stock up on the bread and milk (and other stuff) when the forecast is nasty.
I remember a classmate who ended up in administration in a southern hospital. During a "snowstorm", he called his sister and laughed at how the southerners didn't know how to handle that kind of weather and certainly didn't know how to drive in it.

I remember my Daughter in Law laughing when Atlanta shut down because of an inch of snow until her car went slip sliding on ice. Southern towns often don't have the equipment to deal with snow fall and ice is far more problematic than snow. Currently in WV, the snowfall is not so bad but the accumulation of ice is problem. I am staying off the roads.

I thought the bread alert was just an Irish panic thing. People end up with a freezer full of bread, and some cant get it for money!!! No snow alert here yet.
