The school where I studied 74 years ago Here below is the photograph of my school where I was sent by my parent to get myself educated 74 years ago. The year was 1948. It was a few months after the British rulers left the sub-continent leaving it divided and fragmented. Bengal, the province where I was born was not also left intact. It was also divided into two parts. The bigger part was called East Bengal (Now Independent Bangladesh). The western part is still known as West Bengal which is now a province of India. The building that is seen in the appended photograph can no longer be found where it was located when I was a student at the school. Barisal Zilla School was a famous landmark in the Barisal town where I grew up. I did not know when the school building was demolished. I used to visit Barisal at least once every year till 1997 to see my parent. I stopped visiting my hometown regularly (it is now a crowded megacity) after my mother passed away in 1997. It took almost a decade before I went to visit my ancestral home again. As usual, the driver of the car preferred to use the road in front of the school to take me to one of my close relatives 's home when the school compound came into my view. I was shocked to see a flat field where my school building was supposed to be standing. I could not believe my own eyes! I asked the driver of the car to park the car on the roadside. I opened the door of the car and went out. My cousin who was traveling with me came out of the car too. I asked him what happened to (he was also a student of this school too) our beloved school building. He told me that the building was demolished a few years ago Then he showed me the multi-storied buildings built a little distance away from the old building and told me that our school has now 2300 students and the old building accommodations were not enough for so many students! Barisal Zilla School has a long historical background. The school was founded on December 23, 1829, by Mr. N. W. Garret with only 8 students. The name of the school was then “Barisal English School”. The management of the school was taken over by the government in the year 1853 and named Barisal Zilla School. It continued to flourish under government management until 1891 when the school was handed back to private management and was renamed Barisal English School again. But in 1906 it was once again brought under government management and once again it got the name Barisal Zilla School. The old school building complex was built over a land of 20 acres in the year 1853. The building is not standing there now. I wonder why the building was demolished when it could have been preserved as a national heritage. Barisal Zilla School was the First High School of the Barisal Division. It is one of the best schools in Bangladesh. It will be 200 years old in the year 2029. The school produced many leading local reformers, politicians, statesmen, philosophers, poets-writers, bankers, educationalists, and sportsmen. The teachers of Barisal Zilla School taught me and many others how to be good humans. I shall remember them till I depart for good from this planet called Earth. Photo #1: Old School Building. very sad they did not recognize the historical value or the many memories in the school. i see the same here in my city. there is a sad joke here. MOBILE IDEA OF PROGRESS IS TO TEAR DOWN A HISTORIC BUILDING AND MAKE A PARKING LOT CASE IN POINT. JOE JEFFERSON. NOTED ACTOR FROM MOBILE.WAS ON BROADWAY FOR MANY YEARS. HIS HOME. ON CONCEPTION STREET, JUST NORTH OF ST FRANCIS T. WAS EXACTLY LIKE HOUSES IN THE FRENCH QUARTER IN NEW ORLEANS. THE DOOR WAS RIGHT AT THE SIDEWALK. I WALKED BY IT AS A CHILD IN THE 50S. SOMETIMES IN THE 60S IT WAS TORN DOWN. NO IDEA WHERE THE LUMBER. ALL CUT IN THE 1700S ARE GONE. NOW!! THERE IS A PARKING LOT. SEEMS NO ONE VALUES HISTORICAL PLACES ANY LONGER. OR THEY OFFEND SOMEONE.SO SAD! THANK YOU. YOUR BLOG BROUGHT BACK GOOD MEMORIES THE DAYS WILL END ... TIME WILL BE ETERNAL

What a beautiful school and interesting history behind it. My school looked nothing like that, but then again, it was a boarding school, which also was condemned and torn down about 2 decades ago.

Look That is an impressive building and an interesting story. It makes me wonder how in this world can one far away country have power over another country and its people. Difficult for me to understand. Did The English construct the building? Your story brings back memories of my education etc. I went to several different schools back then. 1949 was the first year. The teacher had to hold me & block the door so my dad could get away without me. LOL I had little to no guidance at all. LOL Luckily, I got what is called education. But the schools did not teach the most important things I have used throughout my life. I learned most of it by listened to wise people who were high achievers in their life. The most important thing I learned came from an old German farmer/rancher here in Texas. ( my now Ex father-in-law ). LOL The rule was to use money to make money rather than living hand to mouth. In order to do that one must live contrary to the law of diminishing utility which came from economics 101. LOL

The law of diminishing utility.--------- The more a person earns. ---------- The less it means to them. -------- So they spend it. Then when retirement rolls around, they are a day late and a dollar short. But of course, they blame the government. LOL Look I could talk for hours with you but there is not enough room here. LOL

The school at present has 2500 + students. The school is no doubt a unique one. However, I miss the old building where I attended classes long before. Because old people like us live with past memories whatever they could be. Take care. Be safe.

Look I know you have relatives in Texas. They are probably aware of skyrocketing home and land prices along with other inflation. What is happening here is a reenactment of the 1985 depression. Rising interest rates influenced by the Fed will result in families losing their homes if they have it financed at a variable rate. Property tax for me has doubled for this year. Now is the time to sell before the eminate crash. In 1985 banks were paying 15% on certificates of deposit. I made out like a bandit. LOL My bet is that it will happen again within a year or two. Actually it is a devaluation of the U.S dollar. Because of the national debt.

I also do not understand why schools are torn down if they are in good shape. The school I went to from 1st grade to 8th grade is long gone and the last I had heard it had an implement store in the same location.

CLEARLY THAT OLD SCHOOL HAS NOW BECOME QUITE BIG AND NEEDED NEW BUILDINGS FOR ITS STUDENTS. PERHAPS THE OLD BUILDING WAS JUST TOO EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN, THE COST OF LIVING BEING SO HIGH NOW. ANYHOW THE SCHOOL IS STILL THERE IF IN A DIFFERENT FORM AND IS STILL PROVIDING EDUCATION IN YOUR HOMELAND.

It was a well built country school and it was moved from the property to another area and was made into a residence. I got to meet people again I had went to school with way back when. It was really an historic event and I was so pleased to meet up with many of my former class mates of back in the 50's. I treasure those days as it was backbone of the way I was raised. Your photo of your school brought back many memories of my childhood school years.

Lovely post and memories of your school days. It looked like a very fine building too, shame it's not there anymore. My old school is still standing and still used as a school today. It actually looks much better now than when I was a pupil there, all those years ago. Take care, Looklook

LOL Initially, this school was a private one to teach English and other subjects in the English language to its pupils. That is why the name of the school was Barisal English School. Teaching methods were also different in this school than in the local language medium schools. No, the building was not constructed by the English. It was constructed by the local people. At one stage, funds were collected from the local well-to-do people to finance the construction of the school building. The money was deposited with the then-British rulers who took over the management of the school in the year 1853. The school building was constructed during this period. It seems to me that you have studied Economics. You know the law of diminishing return as well as the law of diminishing marginal utility. Therefore, I may not say anything about these two.
