Green Eyed Cover Girl.

Famed Afghan girl is now in custody!

The woman who was immortalized by the National Geographic magazine is now in trouble in Pakistan.

The green-eyed 12 year old Afghan girl immortalized on a celebrated National Geographic magazine cover is now under arrest in Pakistan for living there on fraudulent identity papers (photo below).

Perhaps, those who read the magazine would recollect the haunting image of the green eyed Sharbat Gula taken by Steve McCurry in a refugee camp in Pakistan that subsequently became the most famous cover image in the magazine's history.

Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested Sharbat Gula, for obtaining a fake ID card.

The original image of Gula was taken in 1984 in a refugee camp in northwest Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. McCurry later tracked her down, after a 17-year search, to a remote Afghan village in 2002 where she was married to a baker and the mother of three daughters.

Once again this green eyed Afghan woman faces an uncertain future rotting in a notorious Pakistani Jail!
Once again she is in the news limelight for a different reason and this time there is none to take her image to use it on a news magazine’s cover page!

This is racism to another level. Would it by 'eyecism'?

Judgment Day will be interesting - and all paths lead there.

Hermitinthecity,
Probably not. She had to leave her country first when the Soviets came to help the communists who were then ruling her country. Then Ben laden was sent to her country by the United States to help Masud to drive away the Soviets. Hope you can now recollect the history. This woman could not stay in the village where she was rediscovered in 2002 by the photographer due to continued civil war and direct intervention of super powers and neighboring Pakistan in her homeland. She is the poor victim of Superpower rivalry! Thanks for your visit and response. Stay well and happy always.
