Rio Olympics gold medallist rhythmic gymnast Margarita Mamun’s father has died of cancer at his home in Moscow, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam has confirmed to bdnews24.com.

Abdullah Al Mamun Shipar from Durgapur Upazila in northern Rajshahi district was 52.

The state minister said he had been suffering from cancer for the last few months. He was discharged from hospital some six days back.

“He died at his home Friday afternoon (Russian time),” he said. Mamun suffered a heart attack two weeks ago during treatment.

The Olympic victory of Margarita, who was born in Moscow, has also been celebrated in Bangladesh, which she had once represented as a junior.

The state minister who met the family last year on his official visit to Moscow recalled that Mamun had promised him to take her to Bangladesh after the Olympics.

“But he lost the cancer battle,” Shahriar said.

Mamun would be buried in Moscow and his namaz-e-janana would be held at the largest mosque in Moscow.

“Bangladesh embassy representatives would be there in the rituals.”

I'm really sorry to hear of his passing Look; yes, may he rest in peace. I'm glad he had the reward of seeing his beloved daughter return home with her hard earned gold medallion; he could now let go perhaps :- ) A sad time for his family & friends.

Thanks for showing interest in this sad matter, lilium. You are the first and only person of this site who has so far expressed sympathy to this bereaved young lady and her family by posting the above noted wonderful words. True, her terminally ill father’s joy must have known no bounds when he could see her daughter returned home at her sick bed from Rio Olympics winning the Gold.

Look, as you have reminded me during our chat yesterday about your above recent blog. I have come now to read it and posted my hereby comments. It is a sad and pitiful event mostly for the girl, after such a joy came that tragedy which has overcome the other. The loss of a dear beloved one by any means, is always a memorable and grief-stricken feeling. Sabina.

Sabina, I am pleased to see you back here on my blog page and really touched by your sympathetic responses left here for the grief-stricken young girl who lost her beloved dad!
Thanks again for stopping by and for the touching comments. Take care and stay well.
