The Floating Gardens The age old proverb, “necessity is the mother of invention”, came true for our country and people. Yes, I am telling about the floating vegetable gardens as an example among other such inventions which has revolutionized the economic conditions of our poor people who are living now in flood prone areas of the country. These regions are inundated for several months of the year due to flood caused by seasonal rainfall. Our country is a riverine one. The country is vulnerable to climate change and people are off late experiencing heavy rainfall and therefore unexpected flood. If we trace back the history of the floating gardens, we would find that in some parts of Southern Bangladesh., people had to adopt such innovative practice to produce green vegetables since long for their survival. I may add here for my readers to know that some national and international NGOs introduced this innovative practice in the similar geographical locations of Bangladesh where people had to struggle through out the year for survival in the past but no more now! Needless to mention here that women of these areas where the practice has since been introduced are the main beneficiaries! They became self sustained! I may now take this opportunity to post some photos of these ‘Floating Vegetable Gardens’ for viewing by my readers. Hope they will like the pictures. Source: Practical Action. |

Boogie, Thanks for your thoughtful comments. As I have told to Annie, We have turned our city into a concrete jungle. There was a largePond in front of our old house in this city.It was a very big one and deep too. It can no more be found there. It was sold after making small plots and the developers have built apartments on each of these plots. May God protect you always. Best wishes.

Carolyn. I must thank you for asking me some questions related to this particular blog of mine. It proves how much you think about these village ladies who toil hard for making a living even staying half merged while working in rain and flood water! I can understand your concern for the safety of the ladies who plant and harvest in such situation! No, there are no predators live in the water and surrounding area. There may be some water borne snakes though. However, the people are careful of such danger. As far as I know, most of these snakes are not poisonous. The growers, themselves, are mostly owner of these small farms. In some cases, they may form a Co- operative society for tending a bigger area which they take on lease from nearby owners of the water body. Usually, they do not need any subsidy from the Government now. However the concerned NGO working in the area not only finance the people initially but also constantly provides the growers free technical advises including training. Yes, they sell the abundance of there harvest at a local market. They do not usually face any problem to do so. Now a days, these women themselves market their harvest without taking help from their men folks! Carolyn, it is really a win win situation. I must thank you once again for taking so much interest on my blog which is an informative one. Your post has enriched my blog to a great extent for which I thank you so much. Have a wonderful week. Regards.

I feel pleased for being able to answer all your questions. It was my pleasure, my friend. In case you want to know more about these floating gardens, I can suggest you to google BRAC, an international development organisation based in Bangladesh. it is the largest non-governmental development organisation in the world, in terms of number of employees as of June 2015. Have a nice weekend, my friend.
