They Were All Alive !! We might have either witnessed or heard about something amazing that made us shocked and speechless at least for a few minutes during the lifetime each of us has spent so far! However, nothing could have made me completely flabbergasted than the news I read about the blunder that was committed by a modern hospital located in a first world country! The hospital is located in Melbourne, the second most populous city in Australia. However, the hospital has apologized on Thursday after mistakenly sending out death notices for 200 of its - very much alive - patients. It killed off the patients erroneously when it faxed death notices to their family doctors. The notices were the result of an inadvertent change to the templates the hospital sends to doctors once a patient has been discharged, the hospital said in a statement. "We apologized unreservedly to affected clinics who, for the most part, were very understanding about the error," it said. Patient care had not been affected, the company stressed. The Australian Medical Association said the error was unacceptable and potentially distressing to family doctors, while an opposition lawmaker said it was symptomatic of an overworked health system. Whatever it may be, I feel very happy that these 200 patients are still alive and kicking!! Any comment, dear readers? |

Hi Look: Although that was a computer error, I worked in Medical Malpractice law for awhile and was totally amazed at all the real and very serious mistakes doctors and hospitals make. Incorrect lab reports and diagnoses, amputating the wrong limb, declaring death when the patient was still alive, etc. etc. Very scary. You're lucky to get out of there alive. lol

Look, My husband's family loved telling friends that someone in the family or neighborhood had died when it just wasn't true. People would send flowers and express sympathy only to discover the "deceased" was very much alive. My in-laws were upset when I said they shouldn't mess around with death, very upset indeed. What an awful mistake for a hospital to make!

hi mrsjoe. Yes, thankfully it was just an error. But consider about those who had received those notifications! None of these people is like Mark Twain. They are real patients of the hospital. Have a nice day!

Looklook, Thanks for this blog. First I thought it was a joke but later I realized the truth in it. Anyhow, I wonder how in such a big and developed country, things like this happened!!. However, am happy the people listed as dead are still alive, thanks to their good stars. Best wishes and keep well. Lisa.

Thanks Archer for leaving such a meaningful post on my blog. Best wishes.

Hello Bijou. No doubt it was a computer error. However the hospital authorities were responsible for it. Wrong programming might have done it. I may be wrong also. You must now be aware of how such mistakes take place. I was a victim of such an incorrect lab report a few months back! A second opinion obtained by me had saved the situation. By the by , have you read my blog titled 'In gratitude to...."? If not ,I shall suggest you to read it. Best wishes. Look, I've looked all through your blogs and can't find your 'In gratitude to.." blog that you refer to. Was that an old blog or something recent?

You can consider it as a practical Joke though. Think about the dear and near ones of each of these 200 patients. They surely felt bad when they read the notification! May be all of them cried too! We must not also wonder because such things frequently happens in a developed country, It rarely happens in an under developed country. Because the concerned people still believes in communicating this information individually on personal level, Have a great time. Lisa. looklook.

Hi Look: Sorry you had incorrect lab reports and good for you getting a second opinion. Because of all the mistakes I saw doctors and hospitals make in my job, now I don't trust any of them. I get second, sometimes third, opinions, and always do my own research. Look, I've looked all through your blogs and can't find your 'In gratitude to.." blog that you refer to. Was that an old blog or something recent? Last Updated on Oct 20, 2014 5:39 am 674 View , in case it could not be found, then i shall re post it. Thanks once again for your kind interest on my blogs.

Hi Look: I read the blog and hope you are o.k. now. That must have been so scary and glad you had people who cared. One of the women who replied to that blog said something like "it seems that the prayers did the trick'. Just to let you know, that is a very common expression and it just means 'it seems that the prayers were successful".

Bijou, Now that you have gone through the blog, you can now imagine why I have uploaded this blog. As you know now that I was talking with this friend of mine when the attack came unannounced, I could not even explain to her what was happening to me at that time. I only told her that I may have to shift myself to the hospital and told her to leave YM. She was really worried.and did not know what was happening to me. I was not allowed rather I could not contact her from the hospital until I was transferred to my cabin from the CCU after inserting the stent in the blocked artery!
