An observation on how we may have reached this point

Hi folks

Been snooping around a bit in the blogs again lately, and I notice that on the political side there is still a lot of hate and bias from both sides. I think it probably goes back a long time, and is largely due to some of the same mistakes that humans often tend to repeat.

I think it's mainly because too often when we phrase a viewpoint, or disagree with one, we don't leave the other party a way out of the difference that won't also entail insulting themselves and their own integrity or intelligence. We often get caught up in the desire to humiliate and crush those we disagree with, and forget to respect them enough to let them agree when possible. Once u humiliate someone or back them into such a corner that they can't save face, there is just no way they are willing, or even capable of seeing your side.

And I've never met anyone who agreed with me due to any insults I threw at them or humiliation I put them thru. They ALWAYS remember, and are the first to retaliate when the opportunity affords them.

If we think we can impress by being intellectual snobs, we open ourselves up to the same humiliation when we are wrong.

Ultimately, people quit considering the merit of any views we share, and instead are focused on attacking us personally out of some grudge.

Just my opinion.

GBU all,

Gavin

I admit I've been guilty of this myself in the past.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Left wing liberal nuts think they are the only ones that have a right thought. The truth is they are always wrong. They now want someone to take President Trump out. They are very sick folks and get nothing right.

I suppose that's true but I also see it happen amongst we conservatives.

Then I'd have to delete too many comments, including some that insult me.

Things changed in the late 80s when the FCC abandoned the Fairness Doctrine. The Fairness Doctrine introduced in 1949, required the holders of broadcast licenses to present controversial issues of public importance in a manner that was—in the Commission's view—honest, equitable, and balanced. There were penalties involved when in violation.

Translation .. the FCC didn't allow a Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity etc. etc. etc. to preach/brainwash hour after hour without presenting arguments from opposing views.

Immediately following the abandonment of the Fairness Doctrine Limbaugh and ilk go to work. Check the dates.

I agree on ur history but disagree with the outcomes. Under the Fairness Doctrine, talk radio was more about sports, recipe exchanges, and music trivia than anything of serious importance. Radio stations avoided anything controversial. (Many of us can remember those days.) Once the Fairness Doctrine ended, serious topics and discussion was allowed to flourish. Those more interested in music still had FM so they didn't comprise as big a share of the talk radio format found more on the AM stations who had a disadvantage broadcasting in high fidelity stereo. So the listeners on the AM talk radio stations tended to be older, usually with more education and life experience. For the most part, they tended to lean more conservative than a broader mix of society would usually be comprised of. Hence, conservative talk radio hosts tended to draw larger audiences. On many occasions there were attempts at providing talk radio programs that favored the liberal points of view, but they just were unable to compete in that market. A few of those did better on FM, but still they weren't as popular as the FM music market. A flip side of the discussion could turn to Hollywood, the Press, and the television industry where the liberal viewpoint held sway. We should also consider the situation in our schools on all levels where liberal viewpoints are still allowed to dominate.
