Dem Debate 11/14/15

Hi folks.

Just finished watching the Democratic Candidates debate, and this conservative has to admit that CBSN did a fine job. This was not a love fest. The questions were substantive and often challenging to the candidates, and I noticed the atmosphere often became much more intense between the candidates than I recall the first debate.

I think the standings will remain the same basically, altho I think O'Malley definitely raised his stature. And if I'm correct, that means he drew some support away from Hillary and Bernie, but I can't say which of the latter was hurt the most by it. My guess is they are still both going to be neck and neck with each other for the top position, with Hillary holding a slight lead. But now they will be fighting over a bit smaller piece of the overall pie.

I'm still disinclined to think O'Malley can come out on top by Convention time, but I can't see him dropping out of the race just yet. He had a good night, while Bernie and Hillary, altho not embarrassing themselves, did nothing to really further their standing among Dem voters.

O'Malley's best applause came when he called Donald Trump an "Immigrant bashing carnival barker" (I may not have the quote exactly correct, but that was the gist of his jibe) Personally, I think that's unfortunate for him, because he had some other more substantive comments during the night worthy of more respect for his thinking and abilities, that may be quickly forgotten as a result.

Compared to the Republican debate last week, I sensed more lofty sounding platitudes and rhetoric this evening, BUT! In fairness, that may be simply due to my subconscious inability to notice any similar trend among the Republicans due to my conservative leanings.

All of the candidates took some hits, and all of them scored some points against one another. I think it was a good debate.

I guess the thing that I (as a conservative) am most pleased about is that it appears the mainstream media has felt the burn from the debacle conducted by bias and cheap-shot tactics of the moderators at the second Repub debate, and have learned from that mistake.

In that regard, I think the American people are the winners, both liberal and conservative.

JMHO, and GBU all,

Gavin

    Gavin,

I watched it also and thought Hillary may have gained a tiny bit on old Bernie because of his slow responses at times and also because he refuses to jump in the middle of Hillary's real faults. He could have dragged up a hundred different things but he is too timid.

O'Malley is playing the same role as John Kasich in the Republican debates. He is the loud mouth who appears to just want an audience for his views. What he really wants is a Cabinet position, maybe even VP. I won't happen bt his assessment of Trump is pretty fair.

Hi Fossil!

Well, I cant' say my opinion is any better than yours. Gonna be interesting to watch it all play out.

Curious tho: I know u'r a conservative, but I also know u dislike Trump. If he won the RNC nomination, would you then vote for any of the 3 Dem candidates in the General Election?

Personally I'd still prefer even Trump to any of the current Dem candidates, but I only vote Republican about 90 - 95% of the time. Just wondering what you'd do in that situation?

Thanks for commenting and GBU,

Gavin

I think Hillary is still wondering where she put the corn cob, Just can't seem to find it anywhere
I think Bernie is looking and trying to recognize the tree that produces maple syrup.
O'Malley, well I don't think of so much of him as a democrat...more like a Pluto-crat!..... woof woof! He keeps pissing on the tree.. so Bernie can't find the maple syrup. Hillary doesn't care about that, because instead looking up her ass.....she too busy protecting it.

I loved Hillary's..... statement..that she'd agreed with Obama that terrorism is not our responsibility.
Something like.."we will support others who fight terrorism, but it's not our responsibility.
Of course, Bernie jumped and said it was....Since Bush got us into it, by attacking Iraq , it was our responsibility.

Idiocy....is not in the sole domain of the Republicans!

The CNN newscast, has a reporter who said the repercussions of the Paris terrorist. Was some Parisians are now more blameful to ISIS and many are upset with the government's intervention in Syria, that made them a target!

Idiocy.. is not the sole domain of the Republicans and Democrats. We can now add the French. OOps!... I think I got a Frog in my throat.

Hi Maisie!

There were times I wondered if the candidates thought none of us had lived thru the last decades to remember what truly happened! (It explains why some of them rely heavily on young voters!)

Yet I hate to say this, but I have to admit I have no idea what Glass-Stegall is/was!

Thanks for your insights about Maryland. It didn't occur to me while I was listening that Maryland probably had many Federal workers living there, and it's a relevant consideration when O'Malley discusses his track record.

GBU,

Gavin

LOLOL Jiminy!

I have to say that as a conservative, I tried to stay objective and not let my leanings unfairly influence my observations in this blog. So with this and your other comment, whether I agree with you or not about the Dem candidates, (I'll be honest here and admit that I do), I have to apologize to you for some of my words this past week, because you are obviously much more objective and able to view things from the "other side" much better than I had realized.

And now that I think of it. you and I disagree on much, but I don't recall any of our discussions this past week in which I sensed that you were trying to "spin" the truth. We just see things from a different perspective, and in that light I can't say I think you're dishonest.

And in that spirit, I have to admit that the Repub candidates all have some shortcomings too. Gonna be interesting this next year leading up to November of 16.

Thanks for your comments and GBU,

Gavin

    Gavin,

I have thought about this many times. With the "Donald movement" continuing to hold on to millions of American voters, I worry that he'll actually get the nomination. I don't think he is even close to being Presidential but I do admire the fact that he is fearless and is paying for his campaign with his own money.

That being said, I don't know which would be worse. If Trump gets the nomination and gets lambasted by Clinton in the debates, or if he doesn't get the nomination and breaks off for a third party run. Either one could destroy our chances to regain the White House. I am faced with a problem and hope that IF he gets the nomination, he selects a VP who can keep him under control until he learns there is more to being President than showing off his silly hairdo. I will support my party's nominee.

Very valid concerns Fossil!

Oh! Thanks! And I'm betting this had something to do with, or was done around the same time as they passed Dodd-Frank?

Thanks Maizie, and GBU,
