I wrote a column long ago and again recently that I thought it was 50-50 that Trump was engineering impeachment to escape the presidency and perhaps Russian blackmail, a potential electoral loss to a woman (Elizabeth Warren) and to enhance prospects of avoiding legal trouble in New York through some sort of negotiated settlement following a Pence pardon. I still can't rule this out. But I have also been calling for impeachment for a long time believing at a minimum the nation needs to establish some sort of deterrent and accountability is all we've got even if he were not to be removed from office. If that's the outcome then the voters have to make it happen. But I don't believe there is any politician out there that will be willing to go down with the ship. The Mueller report should have been more than enough but nobody saw Barr doing the unthinkable. But now removal from office simply must occur. I wouldn't be surprised if the senate convicted him 100 to 0. That's how senators escape the trap they are in.
