X for Xanthophylls This time of year is lit up by the deceasing amount of chlorophyll in the leaves of many trees which allows the vibrant yellow and orange colours of the Xanthophyll group of chemicals to show through. Although they do not give rise to the bright red colours associated with some trees (these are caused by anthocyanins), I cheated and included some red leaved trees as well and they do all brighten up October and November. They are rather an eclectic mix from our back garen, SunYat Sen Chinese garden in Vancouver, Victoria B.C, Manvers lake and park and one which seems to have been photobombed by yours truly in Stanley Park.           |

Photobombed ... funny! It's a nice photo of you. All of these photos are great and I especially like the second one. It looks so serene.   A day without dance is .... just kidding. I have no idea!

So in Autumn, all the tree leaves are "X"ing out. Good information to know. Abracadabra

Lovely photos..... a good reminder to me to enjoy the beauty of Autumn, instead of focusing on and dreading the coming winter. I particularly liked the first one because I could imagine standing under that tree and looking up at it's shapes and shadows. Sort of dizzying though. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Wow Bondjam I can really appreciated your display today as you took photos in my city of Vancouver. I have been to SunYat Sen Chinese garden. Your second picture is of that garden. It brings back many memories. A friend of mine was a docent for many years at that garden and she was also on the board as well. It was through her that I got the invite. When were you in Vancouver. You truly captured the colors of Stanley Park and other areas. You gave some interesting information about how leaves change to all the different colors in the fall.

Wow what a treat! When I was 15 and living in California, our Senior Girl Scouts went to Canada camping all the way up and back, and visited Stanley Park! We worked for our trip, we had to earn money ourselves, I baby sat with neighbor kids, our parents paid 1/3, we sold pop bottles and tin cans and newspapers (used to recycle) to earn our way. We met a group of Girl Guides and they were with us all one day. We met a male actor at a play we went to. I wish I remembered his name..... Hmmm, that must have been 1955. One morning we woke up with rain in our face. We weren't to use tents so slept in the outdoors.. That time we were on a beach. We grabbed out gear and jumped in our leader and her husbands cars and off we went to breakfast Ahhh, memories unexpected..........  Thank you!

We must have been round Stanley park at least a dozen times exploring all the nooks and crannies.

We have been quite taken by the Chinese gardens we have visited. The Sun Yat Sen garden in Vancouver is a particularly good example of what they call a 'scholar's garden'. An otter got into the ponds recently and ate some of the fish. How an otter managed to cross all that pavement is a mystery. Vancouver's Chinatown is in the middle of Skid Row. If you want to see people shooting up on the street, just walk around the area.
