A Legacy............

......Recently I was chastised by a member commenting on one of my blogs that because of the policies of the Bush Administration, that has plunged some into poverty, that my support of him was evidence that I was uncaring and insensitive to the poor........If any President has been more sensitive to the issues of poverty and minorities its been President Bush. From his experience as Gov. of Texas he was appalled at the low test scores of blacks and other minority students. He promptly began a series of legislation and administrative actions to improve those scores. What better way to lift people out of poverty than education. Sure its a long term fix and its not designed to get more votes like pandering does, but what is better, a dollar bill in the hand or a good quality education in the mind.......His unrequited love and concern for the poor and minorities was carried into his Presidency with the "No Left Behind" act............ Education Week has reported that student achievement in math and reading has risen over the past several years, with particularly strong improvements noted among fourth-graders in both subjects. Significantly, the gap between minorities and other students has narrowed. According to an analysis by the nonpartisan Center on Education Policy, 21 of 27 states studied showed moderate to large gains in math at the elementary level, 22 showed gains in reading and math at the middle school level, and 12 states showed reading and math improvements among high schoolers. The National Assessment of Educational Progress, the so-called "nation's report card," reported improvement in 31 of 33 states examined..........The contempt for this President is staggering and unwarranted. Those opposed to this President have successfully been able to spin any mis-step any mis-spoke into monumental proportion. I some times marvel that his approval rate is as high as it is considering the bashing he receives on a daily basis from a biased media...........Oh well enough of the truth I will go back and put my head in the sand, perhaps my "tunnel vision" will see a light at the end of it.....as I hope it will for you.....

Hi 60: You are certainly a very patriotic citizen. In a survey I saw recently on CNN, thousands of American students could not locate the U.S. on a map of the world. The majority did not know how many U.S. Senators there are, and the majority thought Saddam Hussein was responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

I agree that people making a laughing stock out of their own president and politicians is wrong. I have never seen this done to any other world leaders by the citizens of their own country.

Hi Richard, you just knew I was going to comment, didn't you? No Child Left Behind, eh? Brought in by the president in 2002 and yet another of President Bush's dismal failures while he has been in office. Here is what an highly regarded educator has to say about it. This also includes references to the subject of poverty, which I discussed with you yesterday. I quote:

One of the well-intentioned NCLB objectives is to improve the academic performance of disadvantaged students by providing more choices for their parents regarding their education – for example, giving them the opportunity to switch to charter schools.

Steven Cugley, a twelve-year teaching veteran who works at a Los Angeles junior high, illustrates the difficulty of making this aspect of NCLB work for the kids who would benefit most from it. Cugley was concerned about a smart student's failure to ever turn in his homework. He tried several times to contact the boy's mother. After having no luck, he made a home visit, but no one was there. As he drove down the street, he found his student collecting cans to get money to buy himself dinner.

"We've got kids who aren't thinking about homework or test preparation; they're worried about finding food," Cugley said. "This kid's single mother with eight children works three jobs just to pay rent and try to provide for her kids. She doesn't have time to oversee his homework, much less his education. There are many parents who simply don't have the time to go through all the paperwork required by No Child Left Behind and aren't able to give the required volunteer time to get their children into a charter school."

...For every action there's a reaction for every cause there's an effect. Is NCLB act perfect. Of course not. Is it helping make the difference in the vast majority of cases? I think as I said in this post we will know in the long term. However recent studies have shown favorable results. Don't see how you can deny that. In this case as in Iraq my friends the "surge" is working.....As a former vocational education instructor, I know one glove does not fit all hands, but accountability will.....Thanks for all your comments.

As I sit here in a "slow burn" mode, I just can't miss this opportunity to tell phoenix1948 to GO PEE UP A ROPE!!!!! (thx willy for teaching me this) The people on this site are NOT ignorant and are NOT stupid. That is just plain mean and vinditive. I am from a family of school teachers, and when they took the discipline out of the teachers hands is when the students quit learning, expecially respect!. I have a degree in Psychology and there are some very descriptive words that describe you also. Actually, I can read 60minman's blogs, and I understand his feelings on a lot of things. I have never felt the need to answer any of his blogs, because he has the right to his thoughts and beliefs, but YOU, Mr. Phoenix are just plain, (and I will use your words) ignorant, both in your thinking and the way you treat others by your words. I'm sure I will get some flack for writing this, but, oh well, it's happened before.

Start to finish, left to right, in and out, top to bottom, front to back you are wrong. The mendacity, self-serving, statistically incorrect statements you present as postulates are positively obtuse in their obsequious mendacity. You sound like a moon calf teenager calling to you personal siren.

Speaking of "backyards" or "leaky sunrooms" as the case may be, why didn't I get any feedback from my last posting in 60minman's "Arrogance" blog?
Arrogance

Was I too "arrogant" or are you just too -- never mind -- to get it?
Dammit all - I thought it was pretty good!

"To thine own self be true"? I think every politician worth their salt utters that mantra everytime s/he looks in the mirror, with a little add-on, of course. "To thine own self be true....
and thou canst be false to any man."

60minman, I apologize to you for using your blog for telling a fellow blogger where he can stick it. So....that said....Phoenix1948, I don't care if you had NO education or if I had No education, or if you are green, purple, black or white or even have polka dots...you don't have the right to call people ignorant and stupid. I WAS NOT bragging about my education as it is something not too many ppl know, I was trying to make a point, which I can see, fell on deaf ears. Most of you that have had dealings with me, know I don't normally sound off like this, so now I'll be quiet and return to my quiet self. Senior FriendFinder self

Thanks Newly you are so right about parental involvement. The arts have a role but reading and math compentency is whats needed. As far as those statistics, I gleaned them from Education Week article...........Comon folks this is a serious blog and your comments should address the subject content not someone else's comment.

My dear Miss Thumbs....

I call them as I see them......

for a serious discussion on our school system..one must look at what has transpired over the years.....teachers don't teach...the promote an agenda of political correctness...homosexual rights...in orther words we have gone from effective education..to affective education
meaning the teaching of attitudes..values beliefs and behaviors..the reason for this shift is because of activist legislators...that are mandating teachers use valuable time from academics to the promotion of personal agenda's......... teaching also to the lowest denominator......which leaves a lot of bright students behind because they have to wait ..its the dumbing down of our society...and ..if I may use the term.."defining deviancy down"./..
our high school grades cant write in script...but print...they get into college and have to take remedial reading and other courses before taking college credits....and that includes the bright students.......the remedy for all of this ..is not to throw money at the system which has been down f or the last 40 years....but get politics out of the school system and let the teachers teach...supposedly what they do best.....

Actually PHX, what you said makes a lot of sense --
and I only made it to grade 5.

But in all seriousness, I do believe that political correctness and civil liberty has bled into our education system, and it has gagged our teachers, lest they offend the "civil liberties" and sensitivities of a six-year old.

If teachers are unable to say what they think or want to teach, it closes the door of scholasticism and and defeats the principles they thought they were championing. How can students/citizens expand their intellectualism when exposed to pre-conceived concepts which are open to neither understanding or questioning?

60minman, no need to get "steamed" or all depressed and blue. Speaking of blue, do you still have those dress blues? Phoenix may be able to get in as a Marine guard at the White House.

Be sure to show up with that lobster around your neck. I'm sure the President will just love the symbolism of somehow always managing to get himself into plenty of "hot water" too.

This is for Bijou ...

Your comment about how unlikely it is that some other country..or you have never heard of the population of another country berating their presidnt or leader as we americans do....and I have to agree with you whole heartedly...that you can blame on the the left of american politics...also can be defined as the dumbing down of American..or "defining deviency down"...the man represents the presidency ..there is no longer any respect ..but also...who defamed the office of the presidency more than Bill or Hilary Clinton?...as a feminist you should have been morally offended by his acts .....

and may I also mention...as to the claim by you Canadians..."After all ..we are such a nicew People"..may I remind you ..of the lowness of you canadians ..when President Bush visited Ottawa....the streets lined with Canadians giving him the finger?...and ...your premier at the time ..Paul Martin ..laughing at this decidedly lack of respect for a head of state...?..not apologizing ..or...when an team of 8 year old american hockey players came to play at the forum...in Montreal....the heckling and throwing of garbage ..at the young boys..by the "we are such nice people"..canadians...throwing things on the ice....and aft er the young american boys won the games..not having the young canadian boys meeting at mid ice..to shake hands with their opposites?....and you wonder why I have such ill feelings toward you canadians?.......
and it just doesn't stop there..many many incidents......and as the saying goes...."and the beat goes on"...
