MISSING.......163 Million women

......The two most populous Countries in the World China and India have a societal preference for Males. A new United Nations study has found that in most of the world there are 105 male babies born as compared to 100 female babies. In China and India that figure for male babies rises to 130. With increased technology Parents can determine beforehand, the gender of the fetus in the womb. They then selectively choose to abort the female fetus. It was reported that because of this trend in just those 2 countries alone there are 163 million fewer women. This reinforces the message in those 2 countries and others that women are not valued and could lead to greater discrimination and violence against them. I suspect that many Muslim nations probably already do the same thing although the report did not name them......My question is, Why isn't this reported in the Media more. Why doesn't womens groups that support Pro-Choice speaking up about this horrendous practice? Where is NOW and Planned Parenthood? Why don't they come forward to denounce this form of abortion on demand? Have we as a country accepted abortion on demand to be such a sacred cow that this type of selective abortions is OK? I certainly hope not and I certainly hope that the abortion crisis in America can be solved on the side of life, precious Life. That we never as a nations allow this type of practice be it gender or any other similar selectivity occur. Lets temper abortion on demand with common sense, dignity and compassion in an open honest debate that sees all sides of the issue.........

...The article covered 1/8 of a page, on page ten of the paper.....amazing......

you're not reporting the whole story. there's been many books written / many articles. In China, it used to be that a family was allowed only one child. i don't know if it's still the same today. any other children born to a family received an injection into the brain at birth. male or female, it didn't matter. population control - it had nothing to do with abortion on demand. go back further and look it up... it's heartbreaking. choosing male babies over female babies in probably rooted in tradition / the males carry the family name, etc. research back at least 15 years, if not more...
maybe someone else on this site is even more current on the situation.

Drew2 I am probably do not know the whole story as the article was so small and brief that it gave no reference information other than a "new United Nations study." I have always known certain societies strongly prefered Male off spring but to use selective abortions in this manner is unconscionable to me.

60minman,
Our own society values males more than females.
Consider the fact that a son may be named the first, second, etc. but has naming a girl child after her mother even been considered??
I believe in abortion being available without restriction..BUT...I also do not believe in abortion as a method of birth control.
It's important to NOT stick our collective heads in the sand...and expect our children not to have the same feelings that we had at their age-very unrealistic...The more information your kids have regarding sex and contraception, and easy access to 'products' without feeling ashamed...the better!!!!! IMHO

60minman...a couple of things obviously not mentioned in the article you read. They may give a more objective view.

First of all, the laws on birth in China may be draconian, but they were first implemented (in 1979 approx) to reduce population, which was growing so fast that it got to over one billion. The "one child" law was meant to force couples to take responsibility into their own hands and use proper birth control. Unfortunately, it was not foreseen that because of cultural and traditional reasons, people restricted to one child would want sons to carry on the family name. The ability to choose the gender came along much more recently...so what happened was that many women hid their pregnancy, and delivered in secret.

Secondly, the law has always been restricted to ethnic Han Chinese living in urban areas. Citizens living in rural areas and minorities living in China are not subject to the law. It has been successful in reducing population growth by around 300 million over the first twenty years of implementation. If 163 mllion women are "missing" surely that means almost the same amount of men are missing too...sheds a slightly different light on the subject doesn't it? And shows just how reports can be biased.

The law has been relaxed a little now that millions of sibling-less people in China are now young adults in or nearing their child-bearing years. A special provision allows millions of couples to have two children legally. If a couple is composed of two people without siblings, then they may have two children of their own, thus preventing too dramatic of a population decrease.

I agree with Chuck, it's wrong to condemn another culture by our standards. Especially since, before China made this ruling, they were criticised for bringing children into deprivation and poverty...as was India...as are many countries of he so-called "Third World"

ANY curb on population, in any country or culture, is going to be criticised by someone. The way I see it...whatever is done will be wrong to some eyes.

But, what is the more evil choice...to go on and on bringing children into a world to die slowly of starvation and disease, because the planet cannot sustain the massive growth of human population we've seen in the last century...or to curb population growth in whatever way we can?

The problem was created by humanity...the responsibility is ours to solve it.And we wont do that if we do sit on our arses doing nothing but point out the "evils" of others.

Katie au lait ....Thanks for the info, I just wanted to highlight the fact that liberal abortion rights groups here in America are very silent on this. They do not condemn this practice in Asia because it does not further their abortion on demand agenda. I understand that China has a 1 child thing but when parents find out its a girl abort it and try again. The Abortion rights group here in America want the same thing. No matter the reason you have the right to an abortion..... I stongly disagree with this practice....
