Does Government Want Higher Gas Prices?

.....It seems as though everyone concerns themselves now with higher gas prices as crude oil reaches $100 a barrel. Is it the Governments fault? I don't think so. They (the government) derives revenue from gasoline sold at the pump. Its the same per gallon no matter what the price. Higher gas prices does not mean more revenue collected. Higher gas prices means less gas is sold. With ever increasing Americans buying more fuel efficient cars coupled by less gasoline being sold, due to higher prices, less revenue will be collected.......Federal and State Governments are now scrambling to replace the lost revenue. One proposal is to tax the miles driven. A chip would be placed in your vehicle(s) to record your miles driven and you could be taxed accordingly. How insidious is that? Just like the guy who came up with witholding tax on your income, this is just as devious. Gee now I cant drive to the grocery store because I cant afford the tax. Sounds funny doesn't it but its coming........So you want me to vote for someone in 2008 who will raise taxes? I don't think so. Its just one more reason we need to support HR 35 the "Fair Tax". Voting your conscious may soon be replaced by voting your wallet if it hasn't already.

.....from the demented mind of 60minman please dont tax my Lobstahhhhhh...........

Of course it's the fault of the current government. Under this administration the value of the dollar has gone through the floor due to grossly inept economic policies.

The price of oil is based on the dollar, therefore it takes more of those devalued dollars to purchase a barrel of oil. Ergo, the Bush administration is guilty of mismanagement and also guily of being responsible for the high price of gasloine at the pump.

Wait till they begin basing the price of oil on the Euro. Then we will be in very, very deep doo-doo and the crap will really hit the fan!

The higher the price, the better, so far as I'm concerned. Perhaps people will come to their senses at some price point and start to conserve.

Of course, higher oil prices also benefit me directly since I drive very little, own a lot of oils stocks, and live in a province that exports the stuff.

Congress now has Democratic leaders, installed in part because the voters repudiated Republican policies on a host of issues, primarily the war, but also on pocketbook issues such as health care, energy and the environment, education and immigration.
My question is when are they going to make those changes they ran their campaigns on? After all Congress calls the shots..Did we vote in the same ole, same ole? Just that one looks like a dumb elephant and the other a stupid jack*ss.

Me, I don't think many politians are thinking about you and I.

Well said Ima!

When a government promises lower taxes they do it to get votes. Then they can't follow through, they need to compensate. And they do that by raising other taxes, or even creating new ones. They know very well that they've made impossible promises, but they also know that they have many ways of clawing it back, mostly by "robbing Peter to pay Paul"

They play the game of "Gain in one thing...lose in another"

And they can always find an excuse for a new tax...at the moment anything can be put down to limiting the effects on our environment.

So, in all the worrying about the economy, why IS spending trillions upon trillions on space exploration STILL so important? Suspend that for a year and America's economy would recover. It's not as if there's a race with other nations to land on Mars or wherever now.

And, when all's said and done, that's probably the biggest cause of Global Warming.

Maybe that's too simple an answer...no doubt everyone knows better, lol.

We have had futures for many years and they haven't led to $100 a barrel for oil. It is only during the seven years of the Bush administration that have grossly devalued the dollar, that the price of oil has attained astronomical proportions.

But of course it is only a coincidence that the power companies funded both of Bush and Cheney's presidential campaigns.

It's payback time, folks!

Imatallone ....not so if the "Fair Tax" would be adopted it would end the reign of the IRS. If your paycheck says 500 bucks you would recieve 500 bucks, You go to the store and the item cost 50 bucks you pay 50bucks at the checkout. The bill is called HR 35 but there are few legislators signed on but alas we are working hard to get more.

No you don't. Canada has all that, plus budgetary surpluses and a favourable balance of trade. The declining US dollar isn't a good sign either. Another indicator is stock market performance. It's been better in Canada in the past few years.
