Immigration ....My thoughts and my cure.

.....OK Immigration. A hot button issue that is beginning to take center stage in the political arena of both parties. I have little hope that either will get it correct but I have lots of hope the American people will. If Americans are able to communicate their thoughts on the matter than just maybe the politicians will act. Lets hope so......OK 60minman if your so smart what would you do?........#1 Secure the border. It has been estimated that a high technology fence along our Southern border will cost approx. 8 billion dollars . If the city of Boston can dig a tunnel underneath their city so that access to the airport is easier for 12 billion dollars the federal Government can build a secure fence. Yeah I know skeptics say they will just tunnel under it. True but when tunnels are discovered fill them back in. Sooner or later somebody will get tired of digging.....#2 Deal with the undocumented immigrants we already have. The majority of those folks contrary to popular opinion are not criminals. They are just like you and I . They work hard and just want a better life for their families. That sounds pretty American to me. Come up with some plan, other than amnesty to provide them the means to become legal taxpaying residents. It will serve to bring them out of the sub class where they are exploited and fearful of authorities. For the other low lifes treat them as the criminals they are. Have them serve their sentences and deport them. #3 perhaps the most important of all, "Enforce the laws already on the books"...........Will some legal residents be inconvenienced yes. I have seen State troopers set up drivers license checks and yes I was inconvenienced. Happens to all of us at one time or another but somehow we got over it. ....One last thought, Hispanic Americans have contributed much to this great country throughout or history. They have served in our Military with honor and distinction. Their culture has enriched America immeasurably adding so much to our greatness as a people and a Country...Estudio Espanol en escuela para dos anos....It doesn't bother me nor do I get upset when I hear "press one for Spanish" in fact I kinda like it.....God bless the United States of America..........

Agreed! Especially the part about the "Enforce the laws already on the books!" The employers that hire and exploit the undocumented workers need to be fined and do some serious jail time. Perhaps they could be made to work in some of the same conditions under which they exploit those in the country illegally.

Hi 60: There are a couple of things I just don't understand about this topic. Every single person I hear on t.v. talking about this new law in AZ is calling it racial profiling and saying it is morally wrong and a federal issue, but I just can't understand what big crime or inconvenience it could possibly be for an immigration officer or the police to ask people for i.d.? The U.S. is involved in two wars right now, so why shouldn't the State police be able to assist the immigration department and be able to question whoever they want? Also I wonder why the employers are getting off so easy for so long? The law is the law, and since the U.S. needs more revenue right now, why on earth don't they fine the employers? There must be some reason the government isn't telling us.

eyelanguage..... I did not think I was addressing the AZ law in this blog. Just my thoughts on what should be done about illegal immigration in general. Interesting you brought up the Constitutional challenge. If "applied correctly" just what part(s) of the Constitution do you feel the AZ law violates?.....I dont see it in the 14th amendement as the law targets illegals not citizens.

eyelanguage....So you dont like the law because you dont like it. Nothing wrong with that.....Having looked at the law (sb 1070) I did not see the word Hispanic one time. So what section of the Constitution does it specifically violate? Normally thats how laws are declared unconstitional they violate a specific part of the Constitution not just because I dont like it....

Thank you eyelanguage you have presented a clear and concise anaylsis of the situation. I wish others would do the same to the blogs I post. You are correct that if in fact lots of abuses occur under this law it will be struck down, but I might add that it also would probably have to be largely ineffective in its goals as well.....
