Obama Care #2...........No different than #1

........As the Obama administration gets ready to push Health care #2 on America (Health Care #1 was dead on arrival) I still feel that they do not get it. America does have a problem with the "working" poor getting health services only because its too expensive. Socialized medicine is not the answer as it will lead to rationed care, long waits and delays in care..........
....... When I lived in South Africa (2001-2004)health care was not very expensive for me. Based on the exchange rate a Doctors visit would be between 12-16 dollars. The same visit here in America without insurance is around 80-100 dollars. The system South Africa uses is two fold. In the public sector the Government picks up the entire cost for those that cannot afford it. America does the same in the medicaid and other similar programs. In the private sector for those that can afford health care and/or purchase health insurance the government subsidizes health care by 40%. In other words what I paid the Doctor over there was 60% of what the total amount would have been without a subsidy. I did not have South African health insurance as I felt I could afford to pay for it out of pocket. I was covered because of my military service with TriCare which pays 75% of my cost's, however my health care cost were so minimal I was ashamed to submit a claim......America could do something similar if not the same and it would not bust the budget. Medicare could be "phased out" its gonna go broke anyway. Let the Government pick up the 40% on everyone no exceptions. That plus tort and other reforms would make a Doctors visits less than half of what it is today. Those purchasing health Insurance the premiums would less than half of what they are now. Mr President lets fix the hole in the roof not tear down the whole building. We provide subsidies for corn, wheat and soy beans, and other industries lets do it for health care as well. Let competition and the free market with a little help work its magic. Contrary to what others believe health care is not a basic human right but it is not right that it has become so expensive.............Think about it folks, If the government took over 100% of Wal-Mart how much do you think you would save then?

wall-mart (ASDA in the uk ) are a good example of profiteers at their best , anything under the wall-mart umbrella dies a slow death starved of sunlight

farmers and other producers are wrung out to the last penny by wall-mart even giants like Kellogs and Hienz cringe when wall-mart are on the telephone demanding lower costs stock, only wall-mart make any money the more gross the better

private enterprise will never be interested in anything but ever bigger profits for the share holders ~ i am amazed a national not for profit organisation hasnt been founded to provide reasonable health care to those less well off and others with a wish not to be ripped off by present health care system that charges Americans upto 70 times the price for medicines that its also supplies to the u.k. national health service

the uk system isnt perfect but it works very well, if you want equality for people then this is a way to bring that about

I'm tired of this drivel as well, particularly since there's a war to be won.

blackpool I respectfully and strongly disagree for it is private enterprise (free markets, terrible evil profit motive Companies) that provide us with a standard of living unequaled in countries without it. Do you actually want a socialistic state where the government runs everything? I dont know how to make it any clearer but Americans do not want to be taxed with a higher rate than what we already are....have a nice day sir.

I want to tell you about a story about something you mention in your blog, Richard. rationed care, long waits and delays in care.......... It was on March the 1st 2006 when the doctor entered the room and said to the husband, who was in there visiting his wife, like he did everyday for many long hours.

"You have to get her out of here, the insurance company refuse to pay the bill anymore."

"But we have insurance, we have Blue Cross Blue shield, and we have always paid the premium on time."

The doctor, a black man who had had always been a caring doctor and looked after the patient, turned away for a moment, but the man could see there was the slight glisten of a tear in the corner of his eye.

"I'm only doing my job," said the doctor, "You have to get out of here today, please get it organized, and Alfie, I'm so sorry about this.

I was that man and eleven days later I watched my wife Kathy die, without the comfort and care that should have been provided by the insurance company, and in that agony that only comes from cancer.

Maybe if you Richard, had been that man, you would have understood that the system is broken, and it badly needs to be fixed.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Alfie.... I am sorry and I agree that something has to be done but I do not believe we should bankrupt the Country to do it is all I am saying. There has to be another way. It had to have been heart wrenching to experience a tragedy as that.....

Alfie, I'm terribly sorry for your loss. That is indeed a sad state of affairs.

For all the naysayers that don't like the article...there is a big red X at the top of your screen. You can choose to push it. No one is forcing you to read the article or make any comments. You choose to read the article and make the comments. Good jimminy geehosiphs...grown supposedly mature adults that haven't learned to have a civil discourse.

60minman, I like the idea that you are coming up with an idea. That's much better than some of the "bellyachin'" that some people do and never suggest a solution. However, how is picking up the tab for 40% for all U.S. citizens not going to make the country any less bankrupt? How are you going to collect from those that refuse to pay premiums -- is the government going to still pay 40% for their healthcare? It seems that if the government picked up the tab for 40% that would still lead to socialization that you are trying so hard not to start. Would love to hear your ideas on this.

How about we get rid of health insurance altogether and have a tax advantage of a Health Savings Account. Let the Free Market decide the going rate? Wouldn't this be better for the over all economy. We would see the prices of health care drop drastically. This is not to mention that businesses would have more capital as they would not have to pay the cost of the health insurance premiums they now provide. They would also not have to deal with as much of the legislation for all the cumbersome HIPPA laws. The doctor's offices would have to manage few staff members because they would not have someone that would have to deal with all the differences in insurance. This would also help to decrease the cost of health care. Just a thought.

JoJo I think any idea that would lower cost for health services is a good idea. I would rather have our Government fund 40% instead of 100%. As I said medicare would be phased out it will go broke soon at its current makeup anyway why not phase it out. Crap im on Medicare right now and paying around $1200 a year for them to provide 80%. Doctors are already refusing medicare patients now. In 10 years you just might not be able find one that will take medicare. Lowering the cost seems to be the key. Wal Mart keeps cost low so it can be done and the private sector does that best.

60minman, Wal Mart does a lot of things that may not be the best thing for the US economy. They edge out the competition of the Mom and Pop stores because they cannot compete with them. They do not treat their employees very well and their pay scale is terrible. Then, they import a bunch of cheaply made junk.

They are, however, the greatest at the supply chain and JIT inventories. Some of the biggest companies and the Armed Forces are studying the way that Wal Mart moves their merchandise.

We could lower our costs by just getting rid of the insurance. They are the only ones getting rich.

60minman, you can't get Tri Care for Life??? Hmmmm
