SFF War on Health Care.....

.......As the health care debate rages on in SFF its easy to see that many (not all) in Europe and Canada are putting their two cents in on what America should do. This situation reminds me of a book I read not long ago about the American War between the States (Civil War) in 1860. A captured Confederate Soldier from Virginia was being interrogated and was asked " Why do you fight so hard and be so willing to die if you own no slaves?" his reply to the Federal Officer? "because you are on my land." I think th ats the attitude of most Americans. They are aware that your Government takes care of your health and they are also aware that you are heavily taxed for that privilege. We really don't want your input. We really don't care how good you have it. We are happy for you and want you to continue to send your tax dollars to your government. America will find a solution and it will be unique to this Country and the needs of its citizens. Whether you like it or not we really don't care. Was that arrogant? You bet it was. Just like that Rebel Soldier said, every time you chide us about our health care system we will tell you "You are on our land".......

Following your reasoning 60min...if only Americans are allowed to have and express, valid opinions about America then surely only Liberals are allowed to have valid opinions about Liberalism?
And, of course, the same would go for Christianity, homosexualism, and all the other issues of society, right down the line...otherwise your statement here holds no weight.
And that...if you practice what you preach...should mean an end to all your anti-liberal, homophobic, xenophobic, insular blogs.

But I wont hold my breath...

No health care system works perfectly, since the health care workers on the front lines aren't perfect, and there will always be those who are looking for a way to screw it up for their own monetary advantage, in my humble opinion.

I think that you can all agree that some changes are necessary.

I don't comment on the political dilemmas other countries face since I think that we have problems of our own....but I do read with interest rational discussion.

The world is a much smaller place now. We all see whats going on in every country. Being insular wont work. What will happen if China and Russia decide to get rid of the dollar???

So does mrsjoe think that a person who has to wait several months for an MRI because she cant afford it, should die waiting, while the person with private insurance can go to the top of the queue, get her MRI and if anything sinister is discovered in the scan, have it dealt with immediately. I would feel horribly guilty about the poor patient with no health insurance who had to die because she was way down the list of patients on waiting list. Shame. 2852

60min...I share the feelings about outsiders talking crud about our nation's affairs...I read the same ones over and over trying to criticize you or others if they don't share their liberal views ...and in this case there are those that try to concoct a veil of rhetoric using the "internet has no borders" as a reason to be entitled to taunt you and others with their tainted twist. I see that one wrote that it isn't her intention to stir stuff up...I can't help but wonder if that is the case, why does she show her mug on every one of your blogs protesting whatever it is that you have to say about anything...
I'm sure we all are old enough to know what "constructive" criticism is, but I'll bet very few realize that it is seldom, if ever, welcome by those it's given to...this isnt' even constructive by the farthest stretch of one's imagination...
I wouldn't for a second think that there is anyone not entitled to the freedom of speech...too bad they don't have in them a way to present their views in a way that isn't so repulsive and confrontational...they'll never understand what it's like to be an American and as proud of it as you are...I'm sure it must be hard to see such a wonderful ideal from a distance and not be a part of it...it's just an indication they aren't as versed in tolerance as they demand of others...

You know Willy and 60 min and anyone else who wants to listen, I PROMISE ON MY BENDED KNEE, I WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER TALK ABOUT ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE U.S. OF A. AGAIN, FOR AS LONG AS I LIVE, ON SFF. Mrsjoe. I worked in a Surgery for 22 yrs here in Ireland and we do have a 2-tier system, where the rich come first, and the poor do have to wait for specialist appointments, sometimes for months. I remember a bed becoming available for someone once and she had died. Thats how it is, unfortunately. I know I promised before that I wouldnt interfere in US affairs but I mean it wholeheartedly now, Im tired of the whole thing and I have enough problems of my own.Im still looking forward to meeting 60min and entourage next year tho'

ROBYN You know America seems to be a beacon for the world. Every where I have traveled abroad once you let it be known your an American interest in you perks up. Seems like everyone has an interest in the USA. Im not saying that to be bragging but Americas influence is very broad. Your view of America is much different than mine. My first time in South Africa I went out to dinner with friends and wanted to show good table manners. In America that means you place one hand under the table while eating with a fork in the other. Everyone laughed at me as they used both hands as they pushed their food onto the fork with a knife. Cultures are different all over the world. This SFF community is international and misunderstanding of cultures is to be expected. Please dont feel any critism is personally directed at you. Its not. You have always been a lady and a lady you will remain......My best to you and CJC and I are so looking forward to the Dublin bash next year.

Hi 60min. Thank you for that and I do realize I have a lot to learn about the US and indeed everywhere really. I travelled to the US twice in my life, to my brother in law in Michigan and then again to Atlanta and Florida, so its a very small part of America I have seen. I honestly mean it when I say I wont talk about it again, it must be very frustrating for Americans to listen to. We have met so many Americans over the years here in Ireland, only recently in Powerscourt Waterfall where we met 3 young students who chatted to us and took our photos. We are all friends here in spite of our different views so PEACE UNTIL WE MEET IN IRELAND AND HAVE SOME CRAIC.!!!!!!Breda.

No Health System is perfect. But if you say yours is the best in the USA or the world, please make sure that some tv stations know that. Or cut them off and only have Fox. You have to agree you are # 37 in the world in health care. What happened to the # 1 in everything.
I do not care but I would feel guilty, I am safe who cares about others. I always sought Americans were fair. But you learn as you get older.

Ummm...... Sorry but just had to comment on this one. What was that about your land, & not getting involved in other countries politics. Mmmm..Your joking right??? Done a really good job of that in the last 60 years. Shouldn't health care be a basic human right to all? What are you scared of? You might have to pay a little extra so you have a healthy society? Have you ever traveled? Ever lived anywhere else? I'm an Australian living in Sweden(you know the that scary, scary socialist country that's been talked about over there). Besides all the unwritten social rules, how to behave at a office party, wedding, dinner, friends house & so on, it's a very free country with everyone entitled to the same rights. Woo scary indeed. Sorry.. Got to go. We are having our daily inspection by the police. "Coming, one minute commandant". Bye for now. James
