Before Birth.......

I read some comments recently that startled and troubled me. They obviously referred to my outspoken belief that women should be in charge of their own bodies, including their reproductive decisions, even though they may decide to have an abortion. I believe that effective birth-control education and de-criminalizing abortion will make for a healthier and safer environment for women and .

These beliefs have been erroneously interpreted by some members as is demonstrated by their hysterical comments asking which of my and grandchildren I would kill and stating that I am "in favour" of abortion. I would like to clear that up.

I am decidedly not in favour of abortion. I am in favour of choice. I am in favour of women having control of their bodies......that men stop butting in on a woman's business.

I have never had an abortion. Neither my or their partners have had an abortion.....I was always faithful and educated about birth control..........I started a birth control and life-skills clinic in a frontier town here in BC, I supported Birthright for many years and admire their work.

Since the same people that are against a woman's right to control her own reproduction are often in favour of her right to bear arms, maybe you would understand my position better in that context. Saying that I'm in favour of abortion, would be like saying that if you believe in the right to bear arms, you are in favour of shooting people..........

An old friend of mine translated this and posted it on Facebook. Very thought provoking:

In a mother's womb were two babies. One asked the other: "Do you believe in life after delivery?" The other replies, "why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what we will be later. "Nonsense," says the other. "There is no life after delivery. What would that life be?" "I don't know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths." The other says "This is absurd! Walking is impossible. And eat with our mouths? Ridiculous. The umbilical cord supplies nutrition. Life after delivery is to be excluded. The umbilical cord is too short." "I think there is something and maybe it's different than it is here." the other replies, "No one has ever come back from there. Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery it is nothing but darkness and anxiety and it takes us nowhere." "Well, I don't know," says the other, "but certainly we will see mother and she will take care of us." "Mother??" You believe in mother? Where is she now? "She is all around us. It is in her that we live. Without her there would not be this world." "I don't see her, so it's only logical that she doesn't exist." To which the other replied, "sometimes when you're in silence you can hear her, you can perceive her." I believe there is a reality after delivery and we are here to prepare ourselves for that reality....

Based on a true story.

Good blog. I have long told people that while I wouldn't have an abortion myself this is a decision every woman needs to make for herself. Most don't understand this.

Great blog!

Not taking sides on the abortion issue. I oppose abortion, but I can't condemn women for making that choice. (I know that seems contradictory, but to explain it would involve a long discussion on an issue that has already been resolved by the Courts, and it's not my place to start advocating for new laws. My side lost, and I accept that. Unless it could ever come to a vote, there's nothing I can do about it anyway. And even then it would only be one vote.)

But I loved the last paragraph! I've copied it! Very deep stuff! Thanks for posting it!

Gavin

Good blog. I too believe in a woman's right to choose, however I do not believe in using abortion as a form of birth control. I find it amusing that some folks think that only those women who have had an abortion are on the "choice" side of the issue.

Excellent blog on choice.

I think that your last paragraph about the two babies is not about abortion, but about people's religious beliefs.
