Wake up AMERICA!! The government cannot continue to pay for all your needs.

I really get disgusted when I hear folks complain because they can not afford their medicare deductibles, co-pays or afford to purchase a medigap policy. You had years to plan and set up goals. You always thought that the government would take care of you. After all, you can draw food stamps, the government will pay for your housing, you can sit of your butt and draw flies, welfare, and unemployment benefits. If you run out of unemployment payments you can always file for disability payments - WOW - you now have it made.

Everyone has to quit thinking the government owes them a life. Everyone has to take responsiblity for their life - the government really owes you nothing - unless you want to vote an Obama in office every time.

I want to take a trip around the USA - going to grab every 20, every 30, every 40, and every 50 year old by the shoulders and try to shake some common sense into their bodies. Americans, you have to start taking responsibility for your lives - quit expecting the government to take care of you forever. The government cannot cover current costs, they will have to find ways to reduce the federal budget and by trillions. The Chinese are going to get tired of lending us 40 cents or more of every dollar we spend. When that happens, China will own the US. Hillary has already signed an agreement with China that they can come to the USA and claim any property (private or government) should we default on any payments.

If you are 20 years old, your first priority has to be paying yourself before you spend a dime. I do not care if it is only $5 or $10 a paycheck - you must plan for what you want 45 years from now. The sooner you start, the easier it will be to reach your goals. Don't start - do not count on social security or medicare to be there for you when you retire.

If you are 30 years old and now have a family, it is even more critical that you must pay yourself first. You must start looking at 401K plans, buying stocks, investing in land or real estate. You need to find ways to grow the money you are paying yourself. Do not buy CDs or even bonds. You need to provide for your family - health insurance, maybe a 30 year term life policy (still very cheap at this age), provide a comfortable home, and decent transportation. You do not need a home you cannot afford, a new beamer or a E class Mercedes every year or two. Give your the best education you can find for them. Forget about the beer parties on the weekends and going to the Cowboy games on Sunday. If you pay yourself first, you may be able to do those things later in life. When you get a pay raise or a new job that pays more, take at least 50% of the increase and pay yourself first.

If you are 40 years old, you may be in serious trouble. Still 25 to 30 years from retirement. The country is broke - social security and medicare have been indexed and benefits will only be part of what they are now. Your will be starting and finishing college. And you thought you were putting away enough. Wait till the come back and take over their bedrooms with the faded picture of Obama and his hope and change. They may have to live with you for several years before they can find a decent job and move out on their own. You need to instill in them that they must make paying themselves their number one priority even with a job at McDonalds,Sears, or Walmart.

If you are 50 years old, the end may already be near. Major health problems have set in. Your employer is looking at hiring younger and brighter folks that will work for less pay. Never made paying yourself the number one priority in your life, you better hope that at least one of your will take you in. Still 15 to 20 years before retirement and still no plans - WOW - are you in a heap of hurt. The disaster left behind by 4 years of Obama and the USA has still not recovered.

A few years ago a 62 year old person awoke and discovered that they had run out of time and had never planned or even thought about retirement. They finally decided to ask for some financial planning. They were asked a lot of questions and found out that they would have to work another 15 years before they would even have enough money to live a modest life. Could not afford to retire and even buy a medigap policy to cover what medicare would not pay. Blamed all their problems on the government. End up in a nursing home in the next few years, there will be nothing left for your . Medicaid will lay claim to your assets to pay them back for the nursing home that they had paid for you.

You can only blame the government. They never adequately planned to pay for all your needs. The government folks have taken care of their retirement, but left you out in the cold. Much easier to blame the government instead of blaming yourself for not taking responsibility for your life. You had adequate warning, but always found some way to waste the money you should have been paying yourself first.

I want to share with you a true story. I was 32 years old, had spent 10 1/2 years on active duty with the Air Force. Owed the Air Force another 4 years of my life. I knew I could not get out of the Air Force after 15 years - to much invested to lose it then. I did not want to stay in the Air Force so when they came out with a program that would eliminate all the time that I owed them, I was one of the first ones in line the next morning to put in my papers. I did realize that I was going to lose a major investment in my future. I solved that problem by getting a slot with the Arizona Air National Guard. Became a weekend warrior taking up 12 weekends a year and two week training during the year. Retired in 1981 and still had 19 years before I could see any benefits. Could use the VA for prescriptions and the VA hospital for any medical problems. There were co-pay and deductibles, but I could cover them. I had a career that I always had decent health insurance benefits for me and my family. Would start collecting my military retirement when I reached 60, would be eligible for tri-care (that would cost me $50 each 3 months), and tri-care would cover my prescriptions needs with a co-pay. Started my social security at 62. Medicare and tri-care for life cover most of my healthcare needs when I reached 65.

If my employer had a 401k, I would always put in the minimum to match the maximum that my employer would add. Many years, I added the maximum allow by the IRS as I could avoid paying taxes on the funds until I drew the funds out after 55 years of age.

I am not rich, but I do have my healthcare needs covered, have my nursing home costs covered, pay a small deductible for my prescriptions. We have a comfortable living and do not have to much to worry about. I did see many years ago that I needed to plan to cover the worst events. Without my military retirement and tri-care for life, we could not do the things we can now due. I would be complaining because the government had failed to cover all my needs.
Some of this was not planned, but did take place - seemed to be in the right place at the right time most of my life.

Cannot say the same for my love life, but will save that a much later time.

Now on to the true cost of medicare.

And no OBM - OBAMA MUST GO !!! on this blog.

Rusty:

Not everyone that has ever used welfare has SAT on their ASS and expected the government to take care of them. I was on public assistance for a few years. I have worked hard to have what I have. I have never once been on unemployment in all my working life. I'm not a lazy person. I know many people that are hard workers but things happen in life that are often out of our control.

Mind you there are many people that sit on their ass and expect the government to take care of them. I see it too. But I'm definitely not one of them and I will not generalize as you seem to.

I have a retirement, a 457, etc. But that can all be wiped away in a heartbeat with one illness. I've seen that happen too. There are no easy answers and this will not be solved here in Blogland.

Nuff said.

moot - there are numerous places he can go to get healthcare services where he does not have to pay. One of next blogs will lay out these places. In Texas, for example, each one of the 540 counties have at least one county hospital - some counties are to small so they have county hospitals next door. Around Dallas, there is Parkland Hospital ( the secret service took President Kennedy to Parkland when he was shot) that is the county hospital. Parkland receives millions in tax support - property taxes. Parkland is also a level one trauma center and they get a lot of the very critical cases and there are many. They have to take patients, even those that cannot pay. Heart transpland, liver transplants, kidney transplants, heart attack patient - many of them do not have sufficient funds to pay for those services - In Fort Worth, there is the John C Peter hospital and in Houston that is the Harris hospital district. No complicated government program -

Hi again

Some of the comments here remind me of that old children's tale about the Ant and the Grasshopper.

Somehow, under the runaway liberalism, and politicians like the Dems and Obama, I can't help but wonder how that story would be retold under their politically correct guidelines? Or, would the NEA even allow their members to teach it in the public schools?

I'm not saying the concepts and motivations that make up what we call Liberalism is necessarily a bad thing. Only that it can be abused, and get out of hand. I don't think anyone opposes helping those in need. I think many ppl oppose "helping" them in such a way that KEEPS them in need. Especially when it attempts to convince, or even force us into needing them.

GBU all,

Gavin

Gavin:

I'm not opposed to setting up poor houses like many many years ago. I don't think many would enjoy that and could be a motivation to get off their butts to better themselves. Just a thought.

No everyone has good work ethics. Some people have no ethics. Look at the financial mess that started WAY before Obama was ever elected.
