Just cuz it's in a book doesn't mean it's true

I am reading a book entitled 'Hemingway Goes To War' by Charles Whiting, a British author.

He writes on page 35 of my edition that the first US soldiers to die in combat in the Western theatre during WWII were killed by French troops in North Africa in November, 1942.

This is incorrect.

The first US combat deaths were earlier that summer during the Dieppe raid.

50 US Rangers landed on the French coast along with Canadians and Brits.

Four of the Rangers were killed by German fire, not French.

Mr. Whiting, now deceased, seems to have been a pretty good historian.

Perhaps it was just bad editing that resulted in this error.

It would have been more accurate to state that the first significant number US combat deaths was in North Africa.

Amigo, Thank You for enlightening us. My blood boils when I find out history books fail to tell us the truth. The book you mention is not an actual history book but can fool the reader into believing that actually happened. I encourage you to write to the publisher and get them to add a NOTE...with what REALLY happened.
I was going to contact the author, but he is dead.

I have done that several times in the past when I saw something i knew was incorrect.

Usually the authors are grateful for the info.

Only in one case did i get snippy reply.

I think I get your point.

we can believe everything we read.... I think that pretty much goes without saying. Although people here do that.

I think there's a bigger problem than believing everything that's written.

I think here, that because of the person who says it, one chooses to believe nothing that that person writes.
That's the other side of the coin.

Just because someone is totally wrong on one issue doesn't make them wrong on others.

Pretty obvious what happened.

The usual suspects have decided to indulge in their petty personal squabbles.

I may have to rework my no deletion policy if this continues.

What exactly is that?

It's not your normal humorous self?

Well I've taken a lot of humor from your post...I make this shit up as I go!

Like silverbelle is a has been, but I'm not sure which been she has been.
And the only proof we have that Don is smart, is that he's smart enough to fool her.

Like lulu who's a wallabee. no,no that's not it, that's a shoe or an Australian kangaroo......I mean wannabee, like in a Don Juanabee. (educated ruling class, my ass!)

or maise, who wants someone like panther to vote any republican because Obama is so bad.. Even when that Republican is asked what a G-spot is?
and his answer is the thousand dollar bill he paid to get in the box (ballot), of Charlotte's, North Vagina.!

It was not my intent to turn this into a general discussion of twisted history.

I wish people would stick to the matter at hand.

maisie,

Someday i'll just stop trying to explain myself. I seem to do it all the time and no one else even tries.

Anyway, my point is this.....the specifics of my life are no worse off because Obama is the president.
In the general sense, Obama has not made this country, what I'd like it to be. I see things I wish he would do to make the country better. but the bigger pictures tell me I have to accept that we are what we are. No president is going to fulfill MY goals for this country.
We differ in some things we'd like to see, but we agree on a lot of what we'd like to see.
You, think that someone other than Obama, is going to provide you with those things. I don't know, maybe, but maybe not.
I doubt the specifics in your life have change much for the worse, most likely in reality they have gotten better. Not because of Obama, but because it's what we try to do in America.
You have every right to want things to be they way you like them.. But It's hard for me to understand trying to make that so, by the method you are choosing.
What I do know, is that Obama isn't as bad as you would like us to believe. He's not as good as the liberal would have us believe either, Although liberals don't blast me with that every chance they get.
Obama is not the issue for me, I don't want to hear about Obama.
I want to know more about you want for this country, and what you think we can do to make it happen.

Thank you, I have resigned myself to thank anybody here who tries to understand, whether they agree or not.

yes i am confusing, thinking I'm pulling in one directions while everyone else see it as double talk, taking both sides, or being against both sides. Word do get in way sometimes, and prevent meanings from being understood.

All the words here, like liberal and conservative, detract from the meaning of what I say.

Believe me maisie I try hard to overcome being confusing. Just can't overcome the words.

I have resigned myself not to use them anymore, can make my point with them, then I might as well try to make it without them.

"Obama and the Left always use whatever interpretation puts the US, Christians, Republicans and the West in the worst possible light".

He can't do it, maisie, It's absurd to even think he/they would try. If that was their goal, they just wouldn't do it that way. Could not happen that way, There has to be a different perspective to look at it. You can't take everybody, and say he/they are against them all.
