Obamacare as reported in The Economist

The best description of Obamacare that I have seen is in an October issue of The Economist.

It's written from a foreign perspective for non-Americans so it's more easily understood for them as wot don't have the good fortune to be residents or citizens of The Greatest Nation On Earth.

Two items in it stand out for me:

- The furor over Obamacare is baffling to the rest of the world. Most rich countries have universal coverage; developing countries are trying to introduce it. Yet in America, home to the world's biggest health system, the fight over insurance is vicious enough to bring government to a halt.

- Uwe Reinhardt of Princeton University calls Obamacare "an ugly patch on an ugly system".

That last quote pretty much reflects the conclusion I arrived at some time ago.

Maisie:

There is a lot of precedence for federal action in this area.

The feds put in SS, Medicare, Medicaid, to name only three.

The feds managed to get their hands on the National Guard, units that are supposedly under state control.

For a body with limited, defined powers, it seems to have a lot of clout.

What I find interesting is the lack of corporate lobbying for universal care.

Most corporations would be far better off if they didn't have to worry about employee coverage.

The cost of the average US manufactured autos including about thousand bucks in employee health benefits.

I'm sure GM et al would be more than happy to dump that cost on the feds.

This is one issue that should have both public and corporate support.

The Americans arguing over affordable health care is baffling alright. Otto von Bismarck introduced a health care system to Germany back in 1880. It wasn't that Otto was a big leftist or a particularly nice fellow, it just made sense to be sure his people were healthy.
Yeah, and that led to Hitler!

It's the logical conclusion to what you said.

In case you haven't noticed, it's my blog, so I can comment on anything I like whether it's directed to me or not.

So your position is that government health care is OK for veterans and those over 65, but not anyone else?

Brings to mind the Red Queen and something about being able to believe six impossible things before breakfast.

It doesn't look all that good from the outside either.

One hopes it's the first step in the right direction.
