Frightening rise in Canadian gun violence!

Gun homicides in Canada increased by almost 10% from 2011 to 2012.
A clear indication that the Harper government made a serious error when it eliminated the long gun registry brought in a previous Liberal administration.

Pretty much off topic, don't you think?

The title of my blog is not "How Many Guns Do You Own, And Tell Us How You Feel About That".

I'll let this stand, but it's very close to qualifying for deletion for irrelevancy.

It's only going to get worse Rent. Just look at the catastrophe in America as an example of what NOT to do about the gun lobby.
I doubt it. The trend is to less violence overall.

2012 is pretty normal, despite the increase of 14.

I'll let this one stand.

But be aware that you are coming close to breaking my one rule - no insults allowed in blogs to other SFF members.

Insults directed at me are fine, and generally appreciated especially if pithy.

Gun homicides in Canada exceeded 200 three times since 1995.

Congrats to Gavin.

He is the only one who asked the obvious questions.

I posted this as an example of misleading Fox-like reporting.

Gun homicides increased by 14, from 158 to 172.

Some past years had higher numbers.

    I'm curious tho:

Has the overall death rate changed?

Better still, has the overall murder rate changed?

And best of all, has there been a change in overall violent crime resulting in injury or property damage?

How dare you imply my data is misleading?

What are you, some kinda statistics pervert?

I have every right not to respond to your slanderous inferences.
Just as the gun nuts don't respond to mine.

In Calgary Alberta 21 homicides so far in 2013, Stabbed 11, Assaulted/Beaten 6, Shot with hand gun 4 (1 family dispute, 1 argument, 2 drug related). Looks like long knives were the main cause, not long guns.

I suggest an investigation into Swiss gun ownership laws before getting too enamoured of their way of doing things.

I very much doubt the NRA would approve of similar laws in the US.

In any case, this is somewhat off topic.

Can we limit ourselves to rants about the increase in Canadian gun violence that has has me so incensed?

Hi Rentier: I agree with Lulu. The only people who need to have a gun are the police and the military. I had to call 911 for the police once and even though I lived on the 16th floor the cops arrived at my door in about a minute.

From recent accounts in this vast city of Toronto I've learned that in most cases, the homicides arising from the use of guns were largely controlled or initiated by 'gangs'. They seem to get hold of guns, regardless. Having said all this, I truly believe in Canada's gun control laws. Personally, I have no desire to own one, even though my hubby (years ago) served in our military.

Oh and please Liszt, please don't compare us to Switzerland. I've lived in Europe... totally different picture there. As for conscription, we had that in prior times and I don't feel it's necessary now, although many of our young men could learn a lot from military training at a young age.

Canada is too close to the US and is catching this from us evil gun nuts to the south. Maybe the country should move for its own protection.

It is virtually impossible for the average citizen in Canada to legally own a hand gun.

I had my long guns (hunting rifles) registered and it was a complete waste of time. I ended up giving them to my son-in-law (and that was a hassle) and just kept my old .22 .

A whole 10% ...oh my goodness...and here I thought that gun deaths had decreased....sighhhh.

I believe stats can be made to make something look good or bad if portions of the findings are left out. No one in their right mind is going to use a registered gun to commit a crime. Were the shooting GANG or criminal related. How many criminals rush out to register a gun? To be Racist minded, by what nationality were most of the homicides committed by? How many of the homicides were related to a "long gun" how easy is it to carry a long gun into a bar or shoot from a vehicle.

If the country, any country wants to have registered guns I am all for it, but when it is going to cost the person an absorbent price to register the gun and then have to pay to keep it registered every so often, then it is just a money making thing for the government and people will not want to do it.

Implement strict gun controls. Why would anyone be against that?

Well, I certainly think it unbelievable reasoning to accept that the one's who oppose gun control are the one's that trust the government the least. Does anyone think that's strange. That it's even more a reason for the rest of us to be for guns controls?
