A modest proposal

I wrote a blog under my previous id, Bikenski, that is no longer available. This blog addressed the health care issue in the US. I think it a good time to rewrite my thoughts given the current kerfuffle about Obamacare.

Two principles that are set in stone in the US are:

- The military can do no wrong
- The government can't run anything properly.

Any piece of important legislation should take consider these two factors.

I suggest that anyone born in the US or born of US citizens abroad be enrolled in the military at birth.

This will give everyone access to health care through the military delivery systems for life, thus giving the US a universal, single payor system like the rest of the civilized world. But without the stigma of 'socialism' or government dictat that permeates Obamacare.

It will also have the additional benefit that there will always be a pool of military manpower available for the various tasks the US has around the globe.

Currently acquiring the human resources for places like Iraq and Afghanistan is cumbersome. It requires activating National Guard units, calling back reservists, and other administrative hassles.

Under my scheme everyone would be eligible for callup at all times.

Another idea that should be considered in conjunction with this is the automatic enrollment of illegal immigrants into military service.

I see recruitment depots along the US-Mexican border staffed by Marine gunnies who would point out the benefits of military service to groups coming to the US for employment.

The US has a long history of allowing foreigners to gain US citizenship through military service, and this policy would simply be a small extension of that.

So with this simple proposal two major societal problems are solved - universal health care and illegal immigration.

I told my son about this blog, and he came up with an interesting idea.

Mistrust of the US government could be eliminated by making all federal civil servants regular members of the military, and giving their government jobs an MOS.

What red blooded US citizen could be suspicious of the IRS if he were dealing with a Marine gunnery sergeant?

I will leave that up to the Pentagon to handle. One option that occurs immediately is to enroll such persons at birth, but put them on a 'do not call' list.

There are several categories of persons who don't easily fit into this scheme - e.g. prisoners serving long sentences, undocumented immigrants already in the country.

Military men are used to handling situations not covered by the normal rules, so I'm sure they can come up with reasonable solutions for all the outliers.

Hi Rent: Interesting blog. I heard on t.v. yesterday an unbelievably huge number of people in the U.S. military, and some other astounding figure of how many people are employed by or working as contractors to the Federal government. And those figures were just on a Federal level, so I imagine there are millions more people getting government paycheques every week at the State level, and also in each city and town. The number of politicians alone getting paycheques and benefits is mind boggling. Taking into account all the gazillion paycheques going out every week to pay all these people, it's amazing there is even one penny left over for anything else. When they say government is 'too big' that is an understatement, but it's unlikely any politicians will work on changing the system that pays them.
