Master Sergeant John Hartley Robertson

Robertson was a Green Beret who disappeared after a helo crash in Laos in 1968.

A Canadian film maker made a documentary shown at the Toronto film festival looking into the story that Robertson had been located living in a village in Vietnam.

There is a good article in the UK Daily Mail on Robertson and the film.

The Toronto Star also has an article with a few details not mentioned in the Daily Mail article.

The film is entitled 'Unclaimed' and will be shown in the US in May.

The alleged Robertson speaks no English, speaks accentless Vietnamese, can't remember his birth date or the names of his American , and may have dementia.

Robertson's sister met the man in Edmonton in 2011, and believes him to be her brother.

Family members have refused to allow DNA analysis.

The US army would have Robertson's fingerprints on file, I should think.

This may just be wishful thinking on the part of the family and film producers.

The only other instance I know of a MIA being found was a Marine, Robert Garwood, who came back after spending a few years there.

Even if I believed that to be true, there are any number of veterans' and MIA orgs that would be more than happy to help.

But he doesn't want to come back to the US. His life is in VN now.

I'm surprised that our American friends haven't expressed more interest in this story given the whole MIA issue.

The CBC program As It Happens aired an interview with Robertson's niece and the film producer on Thursday evening. As It Happens is archived on the CBC website, and is also aired on NPR stations in the US.

New data:

The US government supposedly checked the guy's fingerprints and did DNA analysis in 2009. The claims he is a fraud, and is French, and has attempted scams of this sort before. The niece says she doesn't know how the government could have done DNA checking since as far as she knows no family members were approached.

Analysis of a tooth from the alleged Robertson indicates that he is likely American, according to the producer.

The niece and sister are convinced the guy is for real, and don't care whether further investigation is undertaken. The niece says further DNA testing is being considered. It has to be done on the female line.

The niece says the guy has asked for nothing from the family - he just wanted to meet his family again. She specifically asked him during their time together in Edmonton if he needed anything. His response was that he needed nothing. The niece said they had been in contact with him since he returned to Vietnam and plan on continuing that contact.

Many TRUE stories like this may or may not come into view in the future.

I waited over 30 years after I completed ten years of service(1958 to 196before any American said "Thank You for serving",,,yes I cried.

That person was ajumpingmouse who attended a mini bash I held at my home many years ago.

I feel honored to host a "welcome home gathering" for her retirement in Macon, GA. July 12th & 13th.

.
The beginning of life, conception..

June,

I agree. Any Vietnam vet who came out of there alive, regardless of lasting injuries, should be left alone to enjoy whatever degree of happiness they can find, and wherever they may find it.
