Drive thrus

As I walked to my local Safeway this morning, I saw a long lineup for the Tim Horton drive-thru lane. The cars were backed up on the street leading to Timmy's parking lot.

All these cars, SUVs, and mini-vans were sitting there, idling their engines.

The thought occurred to me that a considerable quantity of petrol could be saved if drive-thrus were eliminated.

I wonder if anyone has tried to estimate how much fuel is wasted each year due to vehicles waiting in these drive-thru lanes?

    Quoting Moot2:
Hi Rent, on several occasions this subject (Minus the Timmy's reference) has been brought to Parliament's attention. There seemed to be lots of support for making it an offense to idle your car's engine for over a specific time. It was the policing of such a law that took up most of the discussion. Your idea of simply outlawing all drive-thru's, might get some traction, who knows?
Not sure if outlawing them is a good idea. They are useful for the disabled, and people with small kids in the vehicle.

Perhaps there is some way to minimize their use.

I never use them simply because I find it far easier to park the car, and join the queue inside.

I do all my own cooking. But most of my recipes involve a car and a drive-thru. My idea of a difficult recipe is any time I have to push more than 4 buttons on the microwave.

Hi Rentier: The huge lineups at the T.H. drive throughs here are so long they are blocking traffic and you're right all the cars are idling so the line can move fast. The coffee is great but someone said they must put drugs in that coffee, otherwise how to explain this phenomenon?
