Foto Friday - Doorway, Firenze Italy

This is a photograph that I took three years ago when Betty and I visited Firenze (Florence) Italy. Firenze is a beautiful city and is the capital of the region of Tuscany. Tuscany is well known among Americans and is often considered as the place that Americans would most wish to visit. The countryside is comprised of rolling hills. Apart from the landscape, Tuscany is often noted for the sublime quality of light.

On my second visit to Italy, I discovered that a series of unsolved crimes had taken place in the hills surrounding Florence. The perpetrator is dubbed Il Mostro - "The Monster of Florence".

Novelist Douglas Preston wrote a book about the events surrounding these crimes. The account of how he (Preston) became aware of these crimes after he had rented a villa nearby, the Italian man that he met that aided him in the research and how he ultimately was asked to leave Italy makes for exciting reading. To me these crimes have a flavor much like the Hillside Strangler, The Black Dahlia or Zodiac all of which occurred in California.

Back to my photograph, the subject of this image is simple. It is an image that carries symbolic meaning for me. I would be interested in your comments about this image.

Fantastic! A very romantic corner. A truly work of art.

It has an air of mystery and threat. As though asking the question, what lies beyond?

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Hi Don. When my sister-in-law travelled throughout Italy, she took many photos of doorways, and used them as subjects for her paintings. I'm not sure of any symbolism, other than I always am curious about what lies on the other side. Excellent composition, light and texture.
