Foto Friday - Our Lady of Guadalupe

Our Lady of Guadalupe is a very old Catholic church located in Guadalupe, Arizona.

Guadalupe is a small enclave that resides between Tempe and Mesa in Maricopa County, Arizona. It is a community of the Yaqui tribe of Native Americans. The people that inhabit this community originally fled the Sonoran region of Mexico because of discrimination by the Mexican people.

These people live in very humble dwellings. They own and operate several small local businesses that sell Mexican food and Mexican crafts.

Our Lady of Guadalupe forbids photographing Yaqui ceremonies even though they do welcome personal observation of these ceremonies. The church has a ceiling that is made of small diameter wooden sticks (cactus skeletons) that are then covered with adobe. The entire structure is adobe. A separate fellowship hall is to one side of the church itself.

I have visited this church during ceremonies in the past. The priest that served this parish at the time of my visit was an Irishman.

Good shot, really highlights the church.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

As always, Don, a spectacular photograph. The black sky really sets off the adobe structure of the church. Thanks so much.
