Exciting time to be biking in Tucson

If you live in Tucson, you are either excited about the world-class charity bicycle race or you want to move to Missoula while it's happening. I'm one of the ones who always get excited about this event. Of course, since I participate it's easy for me to get excited. The bike paths are full of colorfully dressed cyclists whizzing past me. The bike lanes on the roads are full and for once I feel like most cars will see me because of the sheer number of riders on the road.

But I get excited mostly for myself. I am riding at least 30 miles every week in preparation for my 35-route. My legs tingle with the exertion. I can show off the multiple bruises on my ankles from getting used to toe cages on my peddles. My clothes are feeling looser (yea!). Even my breathing seems to be deeper and easier. My knee (the troubling one) feels sore but I think I'll skip the cortisone shot - at least this year.

And then there are the naps. After my weekend ride of 20+ miles, I finally have an excuse to take a little sleep in the middle of the day on the weekend.

I am feeling like a bicylist. I get grouchy if I have to leave my bike at the shop a few days. As I drive around town, I assess the elevation changes on the roads and which roads have the best bike lanes. I even think a 'little' trip to the Starbuck 10 miles away to be totally doable on my bike-just for fun and a cuppa.

Mostly, I am excited for once again challenging myself. This year my goal is to break 3 hours. I have a new (gently used) tri-bike, I've been riding at least three times a week, and I think I'll be ready. Rattlesnake Pass, you are NOT going to slow me down this year!

Next year, ya never know - maybe I'll try for the 60+-mile route!
