A Little Room For Creativity

All of my efforts these past 3 months have gone into house rehab and re organizing my things in storage leaving little time for my creative projects. Since the rooms will be rented I avoided all artistic or personal touch. Boring old brown and white paint by the gallons.

Finally an opportunity to add a couple of touches. One of the bedrooms and the loft do not have electrical wiring for ceiling fixtures. I had always used hanging lamps for the main light. Somewhere along the line these fixtures were damaged and not replaced. When I priced what was currently available I decided "no way" . Seemed it was impossible to find anything appropriate for under $100 and everything I liked was considerably more. I tried a couple of thrift stores. Nothing.

Fortunately you can make a lamp out of just about anything. I did this here in the mobile home becasue I could not find what I wanted to match the rest of my decor. Off to Ross which has lots of inexpensive home decorations. I found 2 items I could use f both for under $20. Next stop Home Depot for the hardware needed. Conveniently they had "kits" containing everything needed for $12.00. The following are the results. Around $35 total for each. They are one of a kind and perfectly match the atmosphere of the rooms. .

Those are really clever, you are so artistic. I really like them Spirit, you have given me some ideas on a light for the music room.

Making your own hanging lamps - you've done a great job with materials at hand. What do you use for light source - candles?

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

A music room offers all sorts of unique things that can be made into lamps.

They were designed to be lit by candles but to make them into lamps I used a kit from the home improvement store usually used to as replacements.

It is definitely satisfying to have what I want at a great price. I have a plan for track lighting disguised in a tree branch. Just have to find the right branch and figure how to get the center bored out so I can run a wire through it.

Thank you. You forgot to include restless, hyperactive, messy and silly.

The Christmas decoration took a while to perfect. It started out as lights on the ground that didn't show the pattern I wanted. Next I attached them to the board with great difficulty and mess but it did for that year. Last year I redesigned the board method of attaching the globes. It was easier to take apart and store and will easily go back together come this holiday season.

Thank you. For most of us the "senior budget" makes us pretty resourceful. Ironically I have adequate income, better than I did in some of my career days but it has to go farther.

I really like how you've been able to turn them into lamps using a kit; less limiting - thanks once again, inspiring :- )

All of our room having ceiling lights, but I light the feel of extra lighting and have two hanging lights in our bedroom, in addition to the desk lamp on Joe's desk. My favorite is a open pattern wicker hanging lamp over my reading chair.
Only half the long living room has a ceiling light, and I've been thinking about the other half of the room, and I've seen so many neat ideas like what you did. I believe I could create something I would like. Your's are very lovely.

I'm sure you could. Remember any sort of container can be made into a hanging lamp. I'm even willing to bet that you have some great raw material in your flea market items. I had an uncle who made a table lamp out of an old hand operated coffee grinder. Something like that is a bit more difficult becasue it requires drilling holes and / or hallowing out parts to run the wires through but I am certain that between the 2 of you you and Joe could turn just about anything into a lamp..

One of my "back burner" projects is to make a track lighting bar out of a tree branch for my paintings display. Just have to find the right branch then figure out how to hollow out enough room to run the wires through it.

And it all started with producing some not so great things as a child that drove my parents crazy. I can still hear my grandmother saying "Whatever possessed you to do THAT?" I always responded something like "But no one told me I couldn't!"
