Suited Up For Work

Today was sanding day. Although I am tired and sore I am pleased to say It went better than I would have imagined. The equipment rental had a new type of sander they just got in. I was the first one to use it. It worked as fast as the ones I had used before and did not require nearly as much effort to move around. I finished it in one day saving me the cost of an additional day's rental. Of course there are still the edges to sand with a hand sander but the big stuff is done. Best of all with a little help from the boys keeping me in sand paper I did it. I did have my doubts even though I refused to admit it to anyone else.

The gear needed to stay clean and safe is so sexy. There is this onsie type of suit that came in one size, men's Xl. I managed to bunch it up at thew waist so it didn't trip me. That created this lovely Pillsbury dough boy look. Of course I needed a dust mask and ear and eye protection. We had plenty of dust masks from the previous work and the eye and ear protection I use when I go to the range. Top it all off with my funky old garden cap and you have it. Think I will set a fashion trend?

You will be the first to get one when my connections in China get them into production. The masks should be able to be dyed in any color. Not sure if white makes everyone look fat but this puffy tied n the middle thing sure did it for me.

We are women. We do what needs doing even when it pushes the limits.

Shoes are part of the dough boy coverall thing. The actual sanding isn't hard using this machine but it weighs 118 lbs. The guy at the rental place helped me get it in the car then my 2 boys with bad backs helped me get it out and back in. Other than that it is just messy, really messy.

Definitely. Back in "the day" it would have been just another day in paradise but at my age and with significant arthritis it was wonderfully reassuring to do it.

I'm not sure what the wood is but it appears to be some sort of native California Fir. Definitely not cedar, maybe redwood. I've been debating the roller vs brush thing. My son said the same thing about bubbles that you did. I will not be using stain as the wood is a very rich reddish brown color naturally. I am leaving some texture and grain in the wood to keep it in the same style as the rest of the house. It was renovated in the 70's and the main area is open great room style with a loft over these 2 rooms and bathroom.

Would you believe you can not buy polyurethane here in CA? The guy at the plumbing store where I went today to take care of yet another problem told me it hasn't been available in about 10 years here. He also has real hard wood flares that are pretty rare around here these days and recently re finished his.

I almost considered going out of state to get what I want but decided that it was too much trouble for floor finish. I ended up getting a clear transparent deck sealer and finish that matches the color of the wood. So far my test patch looks good.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Thanks again for the info. I will check things out.

As far as the deck sealer lasting - at my age I figure it will likely out last me! Another thought is that I may go ahead and use it for now to get things cleaned up and protected then add the polyurethane as a top coat. I have used that way many times on furniture.

I have been for the past couple of months and probably will be for the next 4 - 6 weeks. Nothing like repairing the damage of 20 years of use topped off by the renter from Hell. The good news from all of this is that no matter how slow I may have become I am still able to do it!

That they do. I have laminate in the living and dinning rooms and ceramic tile in the bathrooms and kitchen for the same reasons. The bedrooms don't take as much abuse so don't require as frequent maintenance. This is the first time in 25 years these have been completely taken down and redone. I figure in another 20 years it won't be my problem any more.
