Oscar While my was gone I had to care for his many pets. Among other things he has 4 aquariums. Oscar (also the kind of fish) lives by himself becasue he eats his companions. I fed him his fish pellets every day but he was very unhappy. Seems he also wants "feeder fish". yuck. I would have never believed a fish could do this but he pouts. When he is not happy he goes to the corner of the tank and flops on his side. First time he did this I thought he was going to die on my watch and I would have to explain it but then the next day he would be fine. My said he does this to express his discontent. Apparently Oscar was not happy with me becasue I didn't provide the attention or live food he was used to. No pouting behavior since has been home. Oscar also rearranged the enhancements in his tank. I never would have believed this but I actually saw it. In the photo Oscar's home has just been tidied up. He will work at things, actually pushing the stones around and until everything is piled up in a corner. I never thought a fish was capable of this level of behavior but then all I ever had were gold fish, guppies and some of the smaller community fish. Spiritwoman ^i^ |

My daughter used to work in a couple of pet shops. She had a huge aquarium at home with quite a variety of fish. She said much the same as you did. I used to get a kick out of running my finger along the outside of the tank and watch them follow along with my finger

As long as the cat does not decide to try out for swimming in the Olympics. I seem to remember one cat either jumping or falling in. Spiritwoman ^i^

I remember something about it but not the details. I thought about Mike and his fish while on fish sitting duty. Mike sure was a man of many interests and talents. Spiritwoman ^i^

Very nice and intelligent fish, just as the water turtle I have here. Thanks for sharing Spirit. Enjoy your day. Lisa.

A fish that eats their companions and pouts and has OCD. I can't say that sounds like a pet I would want. Elaine Shuel

Something similar happened to a huge gold fish/kip my son saved from the leaking garden pond. He lived in a tank in the garage for quite a while until someone did the way over feeding thing. Spiritwoman ^i^

I have raised hundreds of thousands of fish, literally. In fact, Maisie should love the fact I used to even sell them to WalMart back in the day. Oscars are little personalities, all to themselves. Hand-feeding can become their favorite way to eat if you spoil them. I used to have a fairly large male who would eat human food like small pieces of chicken, right out of my hand. But, unless raised from babies together, they sometimes do not play well with others. Most people feed an occasional live goldfish to the larger Oscars and it seems to encourage them to breed, much like myself - each time I eat a few live goldfish. You don't want to know what happens when I am hand-fed, do you? Fossil Spiritwoman ^i^
