Trend Setting? By the time we get to our senior years we have seen many trends and styles come and go. We look at old photos and identify the time frame by clothing, hair etc. We immediately know the late 60's by the emergence of color and individuality in clothing. We recognize the 80's by "big hair". Loose pleated trousers for men say 30 - 40's or 90's. Country style wall paper is a dead give away to the late 80's era. We also know that styles cycle through repetition. In the late 60's I found old dress patterns that my grandmother had from the 20's and 30's. I used one and made a 20's "flapper dress" and wore it to a party. It fit right in. In the early 70's I unearthed a pair of button front wide bell bottom slacks my mother had from the 40's. They were admired by friends as I wore them. Hair color is no exception. I remember the older ladies of my youth with blue or lavender tints to their hair. In the past 2 years my age granddaughter and friends have had similar colored hair, although they have added a few more unnatural colors. The best come came this week-end. Granddaughter asked me if I still colored my hair. I told her no, that when I hit 70 I decided that 30 years of keeping the white out was enough. It was not worth the work. She told me that mine is the exact color she wants next and is making plans to have her hair professionally "stripped". I'm not sure what it costs these days but it was always an expensive procedure many used to have very light hair if their natural color was very dark. I had noticed that in addition to Easter egg and fantasy character colors many youngsters are sporting various shades of grey and white hair. Zombie movie influence, retro to the Victorian era color of powdered wigs or the Baby Boomers changing yet another thing as they move through the age spectrum? Spiritwoman ^i^ |

I'm like Fossil, not much hair left to add color to. But the thing I do really think should come back is the men's Edwardian suit with the high collar. I'm going to wear one of those, next time we have something to celebrate! Alfie...

Hi Spirit: I think it was due to lack of confidence in my looks, but I have basically refused to have my picture taken since I was a teenager. I have a few pics I took of myself in my 20s and a couple of wedding pics at my second wedding. Now even though I regret not having any pics of myself over the years, I still can't force myself to get in front of a camera. I wonder what Dr. Phil would think? lol

When I read this post, it reminded me of seeing a pic of myself from the 80s and my hair was very big. What was I thinking? lol I think trends come and go because it's easier to bring back old ones, then come up with new ones all the time. Great post. Thank you. Elaine Shuel

Nice blog Spirit, it also reminds me of my teen's years. My late dad never allowed us( me and my sisters) to wear tight trousers such as what was called slacks those days. Funny enough, one day I wanted to try a pair of it, so I asked my friend to bring hers just for me to wear it in the house. By chance that day my dad came back home earlier than usual and saw my in that trouser, he got so furious, shouted to me, asking me to take it off at once and I did, then he took it and tore it into two!!. Then he said to my friend "Sorry Linda, never bring such thing again for Lisa". Then he asked for its price and gave Linda to buy another new one for her. I really cried but later Linda and me bursted in laughing . Thank you for this interesting blog Spirit, I've enjoyed it.

Bell-bottoms have come and gone quite a few times but not enough to suit me. When they leave the next time I hope they don't return in my lifetime. As for hair color...I wish I had some hair to color. Fossil Spiritwoman ^i^

Love it. It's similar to what happened to me. When I married my second husband we had a very low key thing. Just us and the officiant at one of those little wedding chapels. I wore a dress that I bought some time ago and put aside for something special. The print on my dress was the same as the wall paper on the chapel. If I get home in time today I might do a blog about it. Spiritwoman ^i^

I still prefer natural fabrics whenever I can get them. I am always amused when in Mexico. Their traditional clothing, which counts for half of my wardrobe, are made from wonderful cotton fabric and hand embroidered. However the younger set gets all excited about "American clothing" and love the polyester and spandex stuff. The tropical climate makes the synthetic fabrics even more uncomfortable. Spiritwoman ^i^

Unfortunately the youngsters who never experienced corset torture are coming out with all sorts of things like shape ware, spanks etc. One of the recent trends, Steam Punk, involves the entire corset thing right down to the laces. I have a sister in law who is more than old enough to know better but is completely into this trend. Spiritwoman ^i^
