He's Back!

Some time ago Alfie posted a series of blogs about the turtle that moved into one of his garden ponds. I shared a pic of the entire pond my built to accommodate his turtle. A couple of months ago the pond liner developed a leak so the pond was closed for repairs. The turtle was relocated to a temporary home which unfortunately did not contain him.

We looked and looked but never saw the turtle again - until yesterday. I was on my way out to the RV to change into my work clothes and there was the turtle sunning himself on a pile of dirt where the pond used to be! He survived at least 8 weeks in the yard with no place to swim. I am amazed he survived on his own. We've had him for years, since he was only about 3" in diameter. He's back in his temporary home, at least for now.

We haven't seen Jasper for quite awhile.

Wondering if he has found a mate or just took off for the wild blue yonder..........

Like Ann said in her comment, we haven't seen our Jasper for a few weeks. We used to see him getting a breath of air occasionally, but haven't for some time. I've examined both ponds but cannot see him. I do so hope he is still around and I will keep looking.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

He seems to be one of the generic kinds of turtle. I love the idea of turtle races but would like to know how they got them to move on Que. Did they condition them to respond to treats? This one and a companion were rescued from one of my son's friends who was not caring for them. They started out in a small aquarium in the house then graduated to the outdoor pond a couple of years ago. We never did much with them other than let them be turtles.

This guy is one of the lowest maintenance critters we have had. When he got out of his enclosure we looked all over for him. The yard is about an acre in size but is completely fenced but we figured he had gotten out of the fence and was off to see the world. Apparently he did a great job of hiding out for the last couple of months.

Depending on how cold it has been he might be in some sort of hibernation. I don't know the exact mechanism for this kind of turtle but the land tortoises go into a burrow for a couple of months during our cold season. Somehow the turtles in the cold climates survive winter.

If he is like ours he will show up when you least expect him. I don't know how far these guys travel in the wild but Jasper had to have come from somewhere.

My dislike for drama is pretty apparent, isn't it. Glad you enjoyed it.
