I'm Done

With my taxes!!!!!!!

This is quite an accomplishment for me who doesn't do math so well. I never even did my own personal taxes until about 10 years ago. My Dad had an accounting, bookkeeping and tax business so all I did was take the paperwork to his office. Later, when tax preparation software came along, my husband did our taxes. After he passed my helped do mine for a couple of years becasue she purchased the software to do hers and her 's.

After my life somewhat settled down I felt guilty for taking up my 's time. She was so busy with family and work so I gave the software a try. Yes, I did enter some information incorrectly but the software just about always caught it. I discovered that my filing status was incorrect and the correct one actually helped me get more money back I needed help with completing and filing an amended return becasue my software did not include the proper form but fortunately a relative moonlighted with a tax service.

Fast forward to more recent times. I now have to do a business return and report rental property income and losses. Tax preparation software is now really easy to use, even for these more complex returns. For a small fee they also provide audit protection and will handle any audit needs. And the best part - even I can do it with no problem!!!!!!!!!!!

About 4 hours of effort and my printer just churned out a beautiful 93 page document, most of which I could never complete on my own. Thank the Universe for Computers!

Can't help but wonder though is this what retirement is all about. I am now the administrator, maintenance person and bookkeeper all rolled into one - but yeah, it is worth it and yes, I am getting a decent refund.

I share the anxiety about making errors even though the software program I use is next to idiot proof. I just remind myself that if I make an error the only thing I have to do is fix it. It's not as if I had to face a firing squad.

    Quoting Adolpho:
You are absolutely correct in your assessment of what farmers and ranchers face. The benefit of being a farmer or rancher is that repairs etc can improve the property value and this is an excellent legal way to pass on the wealth to our heirs.

I have done my own taxes for several years and the tax software is really easy to use.
The tax deductible repairs are something I make good use of on my return as well.

Boogie's comment disappeared other than being included in Don's response. Definitely the farm taxes are far different. Can you imagine my grandmother, with only an 8th grade education, always did them, and that was back in the days of hand calculations and hand written forms..

Thank you. We all need to keep pushing our limits to maintain our self confidence. Once that goes we loose lots of abilities.
