Keeping Busy

I have not been around much the past couple of weeks. There are 2 reasons. With all of the crap that was going on I had no motivation to participate and nothing to say other than posting a couple of mems. Apparently times have changed since the days of love and peace but I haven’t. Life is just too hard to put forth effort for things that aren’t important and by important I mean a direct threat to me or my family’s safety and well being. I savor peace and quiet.

That aside there was a crisis at my residence that I had to handle long distance via my sister since I was in Mexico. Somehow the Natives get restless when “mom” is away. 2 residents are gone for good and another temporarily. An older couple will be moving in but I am taking advantage of the situation to take care of some long over due maintenance. Remaining true to my intention to get the recommended amount of weight baring exercise by doing work myself rather than pay to have it done then pay a trainer at the gym I am in the process of deep cleaning and re painting the 2 vacant rooms. One was painted a little over a year ago but my nephew and GF who stayed there for a couple of months left it as if it hadn’t been painted in years. The paint is still good in the second room but there are numerous holes in the walls from a few different people hanging pictures, bulletin boards and the like. Rather than touch up the old paint I am just going to repaint. Today was the first round of spackling. Sunday I will be able to get back over for the second round in one room and perhaps just sanding in the other. I hope to get it done in the next week or 2. Maybe even refinish the hardwood floors. I'm getting to be a regular at Home Depot. I know where just about everything is in the store.

Here I am in one of my best outfits – my late husband’s BDU’s (He was a foot taller and 100 pounds heaver than me and I am shaped a bit different than he was as well) The tee short looks like a baggy dress. You can’t see the pants in this pic but I had to use a piece of rope to keep them up because I forgot to bring a belt. I do have some of my own that fit better but these were the ones that I will miss the least if I totally destroy them. At the very least I will add some new colors to the mix. Jungle camo is out of use anyway.

I applaud your determination to do things without needing help. Not to say that it is bad to need help from time-to-time. Keep up the great work, Spirit!!!

You're looking good Spirit, I'm pleased to read that you are keeping busy. I try to do that too, it is good for us and helps keep us fit.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I suppose I am as someone commented recently "A fisty little shit". I come by my independence honestly. I am from a line of strong independent women including suffragettes and an immigrant great grandmother who was determined to make it here in the US after her husband died leaving her with alone with 3 small children. My DIY projects are part of a money / energy saving effort. After a lecture from my doc about needing more weight baring exercise I realized that I was paying someone to do work I could do myself then paying the gym and trainer to make up for the lack of exercise. That realization made me feel dumb and wasteful.

My sister and family are always fussing at me for doing too much and try their best to get me to "rest". They are more than willing to do things for me. That too makes no sense. They are busy with school, jobs and keeping up the family house, huge yard, pool etc . I fill my time with "piddle projects" and am perfectly able, health wise, to do stuff. It just takes me longer these days and I have to make some modifications in how I do things but the body needs exercise so why waste energy?

I have never had to advertise or keep a list. I have a solid network in the family and community that keeps me busy not to mention friends my residents "bring home". There is a huge silent and invisible population out there that is virtually invisible to the current social service networks. These folks function below the level needed to find, comply with requirements, and follow through. They never even make it into a place where They get attention other than jail and the ER at the county hospital.

I do the other high stuff on a ladder and so far so good, although watching me get up and down it is pretty comical. Have to accommodate both arthritic joints and the need to avoid falls. . I am slow but don't have any supervisor breathing down my neck. I also got a roller with a long extension handle. I figure I can do most of it with this then get on the ladder for the edges.

Good luck with your project.

Both Chuck and I have the "problem getting back up" limitations. I am glad no one is ever around to get a video of me getting up butt first. Very frustrating for those of us who used to just pop up with a baby in hand.

The glitch about comments certainly did show peoples motivation for blogging here, didn't it? Seems the motivation of the select few is to irritate and argue. With no comments they couldn't do this. Very interesting since most of them insist they just want to share information, which is entirely possible without comments.

Thank you. Definitely the work is good for us. that is why gyms were not necessary until a generation ago. Life presented enough opportunities for exercise. It still does but we just have to look harder.

Thank you. As for being careful - at this stage on life can we really move any way other slowly, carefully and deliberately?

The mind says go, leap, jump but the body just laughs.
