New Project

When I was on Cape Cod last summer my sister took me to one of her favorite places, a store called Yak Arts. It was huge and crammed full of folk arts and some fine art pieces from all over the world. She bought a rose quarts sink. I just got ideas becasue I knew whatever I got would have to come back to CA on the plane with me. I saw some paintings on palm fronds. Since there are 22 palm trees on the perimeter of my house lot I figured I had plenty of materials. Unfortunately the kind of palms I have do not have the huge frond bases used in the pieces I saw.

There are lots of the right kind of palms in the parking lot of the of a local store and surrounding empty lots. We had heavy winds and there were lots fronds on the ground. I stuffed my pride aside, burrowed a real car so I would have room for them and like a bag lady ran around picking them up.

So far I have 5 creations. Not sure how many more I will make but we have a local arts and crafts fair coming up in a couple of months. I also have an idea to use 3 of them and make a huge butterfly.

The top photo is one of the large ones. I incorporated my favorite Huichol style. The bottom 2 are of the smaller, darker fronds. I painted patterns the shape, color and texture suggested.

Really like what you've done with the palm fronds - the Huichol style painting is particularly striking. Huichol - what influences - Mexican?

Oh I have done worse bag lady things. It's easier now that I can pass myself off as an eccentric old lady.

Thank you. The Huichols are the indigenous people Naryet, which includes Puerto Vallarta. Their culture has survived the Spanish primarily in isolated areas of the mountain jungles. They have a distinct style which also influences other Mexican art. The minute I set foot in the area I felt at home.

Thank you. Color is me in spite of the fact my mother and grandmother did their best to make me beige and grey.

Oh that would be so much fun. We could laugh and enjoy each other's company so much.

Indo. For years I had an old 86 ford work van as a second car. My son still drives but it is literally disintegrating and he has to take the battery in and out or it runs down. He also sort of installed a stereo but there are wires hanging out all over the dash. It's scary to ride in it let alone drive it.
