Obama Comes to Town

Obama’s San Bernardino

San Bernardino is close enough to be considered local for LA news. Last night there was a bit of time given to protesters for Obama’s visit. The fact that there would be protesters is no surprise. Protesters are something we can always count on for any event. It was what they were protesting that leaves me wondering. Their complaint was that they did not feel Obama was giving them enough time along with the fact that he made his visit a stop on his way to Hawaii. In an attempt to understand their feelings I tried to put myself in their place.

We have all experienced grief, loss and things that make for PTSD and we all react to it and process it differently. I suppose for some the fact that they are recognized and validated is important. However thinking back to my times of grief I cannot imagine the additional stress of a meeting with the president. I also cannot imagine going through the process of getting through the necessary security and pulling myself together for being on my best public behavior, not to mention having to get dressed and groomed for such an event. In my times of grief I did not want to deal with anyone other than my closest loved ones while I hung out in pajama pants and a tee shirt all day.

Giving the matter further thought I wonder what people expected the president to do other than express condolences and validate the significance of their grief. Somehow I cannot picture Obama or any politician for that matter as making us feel “warm and fuzzy”. Thinking back I cannot remember any president coming across as warm and emotionally caring. Maybe a conflict between the role of protector and comforter / care taker? Although I am not an Obama basher I cannot see him inspiring the positive feelings for either role. He is probably the most unemotional and distanced presidents we have had.

Thoughts anyone?

I think it was another photo-op and he was probably insincere, at best, with the crocodiles tears flowing. There was political mileage to be made here but he couldn't gain much by being practical and making a phone call instead. But, then again, he never made the call to the families of the Benghazi victims either. He was too busy raising money for the Democratic Party at the time.

Regarding your other comment about the security measure, think about the irony of having to be thoroughly vetted to be visited by Obama in your own home. Too bad the San Bernardino murderers were not as thoroughly vetted. If they had been, there would have been no reason to stop by at all.

I had similar thoughts about the photo-op, then decided it was just a publicity stunt exploiting people's suffering.

This seems to be the case with mots things these days. Yet another reflection of our current social climate of each individual demanding what they have decided should be.
