He May Be Big - But

My 's great dane's first 4th of July. Like most dogs he is frightened by fireworks. She went to look for him and found him hiding in my granddaughter's dirty laundry with his head in the curtains. He is such a big goof.

So funny, some dogs really hate the noise of fireworks. My old dog Laddie used to go hide under the stairs when they were going off and wouldn't come out till all was quiet.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

Hopefully he didn't try this after being "skunkked".

My cat hides behind Chuck's old computer towers. He can't see us some thinks no one can see him. Years ago I had a "kitty window" so my cats could go in and out as they pleased. Every time my family came to visit with my 2 little kid sisters they would knock each other over getting through the window.

Keeping cool under fire is part of military training but fireworks can be very difficult for those who end up with PTSD.

While I love the colors and precision of the displays I am not a fan of the noise myself. Between that and the crowds I avoid public displays. When my children were young I took them but never enjoyed it. My best appreciation of fireworks was when I lived in one of the south bay communities on a slight hill. I could sit in my lawn chair and overlook many displays all over the LA basin without having to be near the noise.

My personal opinion of why we humans enjoy them is that it gives us a sense of power, control and creation in a world where we have little of any.

He had better instincts than Brock. This goofy guy thinks that he is safe in dirty kid laundry with a sheer curtain over his face.

Collies seem to be a pretty nervous breed. My sister in MA has had several over the years and most needed Valium when there was a thunder storm.

I could understand why he'd be scared. He doesn't understand fireworks and it does get pretty loud.

Yup, normal to be scared but we'll have to teach him where to fond a better place to hide.

According to the audiologist I hear the higher frequencies that dogs do. (Guess he was telling me I'm a real bi@@h ). Only extra with fireworks are the shrill whistling ones. I think it is more a reaction to the vibrations like with earthquakes.

Of course as you said no one really knows what dogs hear. They could hear things they don't respond to. For me the higher frequencies are more like constant background noise but I don't have any way to tell if that is the same for dogs. M
