Sun Moon and Stars

My youngest grandson has some challenges. He is borderline autistic and while able to function somewhat normally has his "quirks". Like many in his situation he has difficult with social skills and communication but is a wiz at math (top in his class) and has understood mechanics from day 1. My BF at the time, a nerdy engineer, always said "that one is going to be an engineer". We take advantage of every opportunity to expose him to creative and / or social activities.

Sadly, like so many schools today art and music are not part of the regular curriculum at his. They are, however, offered as after school activities for a fee. My family makes sure all of the get to participate. Grandson had his first art class of the year yesterday. This was what he created for me. An interested interpenetration of my non structured work with celestial subjects as seen from his very structured, logical mind. The best part is that even though we have never talked about my art work and my celestial themes he obviously figured it out and reproduced it. To me this says that while his demonstration of emotional understanding may not be there he is able to grasp how others see things and reproduce it as he interprets it. .

He certainly did a great interpretation of celestial bodies.

Alfie...

He does seem to understand them and put them into his very structured reference.

I look at this, look away and look back and see something new. Very interesting and very creative. He is only 8?

Tell him a lady in Georgia is very impressed with his talent!

I have a young nephew same age who is also borderline autistic and displays similar aptitudes (math/mechanics). He has fascinated from the beginning. I love how, given the opportunity, they communicate through art/music/dance as it's a fascinating window in to their world and how they perceive it. I love your grandson's vibrant interpretation.

I hope so as he needs something to "soften" his mechanical thought process.

I'm wondering how old he is too.....That is really tragic that California doesn't acknowledge art and music as necessary components of education......The last BC government went through a period where they were trying to get rid of math and music......I was doing a lot of art with children at the time and knew how vital it is to development.........we did a lot of advocacy and put on educational events, protested etc......Now, the new BC government has included art and music in their literacy definition and are convinced that a well-rounded child is a literate child.

They say that art and music, especially for some learning styles, really helps children to grasp reading and math concepts like proportion and volume and so on......I'm glad your grandson is receiving some art instruction now. Just having a place at home set up for him to access art making on his own initiative is encouraging. Thanks for sharing.
All of the grands have had work spaces since they were old enough to hold a crayon.

It would be good if the public schools had art and music but ultimately it is the family's responsible to make sure the kids have well rounded lives . The magnet school my other grands attend offers art, music and sports. and the high school my oldest attends offers an alternative curriculum that has them too. My nieces just graduated from there and easily got a full college scholarships - and they paint, play musical instruments and are active in sports. One is a swimmer and the other a runner.

We do have some good programs available but they are usually alternative programs and parents have to be involved and stay on top of things.

The similar choice of color was the first thing I saw as well. Apparently he pays more attention to my work than I thought.

I too am encourages by the doors to expression art and music offer these kids. The math and mechanics seem to just come to them but emotional expression is much more difficult

I believe he is not only mathematical, he is also artistic - a little orientation and he can combine imagination and physics beautifully !!

This, indeed, is precious - thanks for sharing, SpiritGirl !!

I can see him getting into something like architecture or other mechanical design where he can use both abilities.

One of the methods we used in interviewing child victims was to have them draw a picture and then tell us about it.

As a grandmother I try to "fill in the gaps" that the parents are either too busy to do or can not afford either with time or money. To me this is a grandparent's role - and a great pleasure. Unfortunately we live in such a self centered society many grandparents are too busy still pursuing some sort of impossible dream to invest their energies in the future - the children.

Nice work he done. Surely, there is creativity in him. He only needs stimulation.

He is an interesting combination of creativity and structure. We do our best to encourage him to be ether, both or whatever he wants to. I only hope I will be around long enough to see what he ultimately becomes.
