Does Everyone Need Spirituality?

Spirituality and religion - two very controversial topics and a double edged sword. They can lead to comfort and bliss or anger and strife. We all have an individual concept of them. I found this article the other day. Good food for thought.

My personal thoughts? We are presented with unlimited options in these areas. This is a good thing because it gives everyone the opportunity to find a path that rings true for them and provides them with a structure that fits.

Does Everyone Need Spirituality?
Jen M Fox

My 15yr and I went for a long walk yesterday and she asked me " do you think everyone needs spirituality?" I thought that was a great question. I stay away from the words that generalize a group so "everyone needs" is not really how I would approach the answer. I stated "I think people gravitate to what speaks to them, but sometimes people can't hear to well. The world can be too loud for them to hear what their inner voice is trying to say to them." I told her about my encounter with the bees yesterday. I said " the bees were so inspiring to me, they made me realize my insignificance in the world, they humbled me. You see the Earth needs the bee to make food, without the bees there is no food, simple as that. The world would still function without me. I am needed by my family but as a human, I am not a significant part of the Earth's sustainability. I mean my actions can make a difference, I get that ,but humans don't make the Earth a better place physically by just existing. We take and rarely give back. The bee gives and gives and gives. I realized at that moment, What we all "need" is to feel useful and have a purpose. That is what we are all looking for. We unconsciously and maybe consciously make up these lives that seem to matter. Then we get upset when we realize we have just dedicated 30 yrs to a company and we didn't matter. I think we ultimately find meaning in our relationships, and community work. So many people wouldn't feel lost and hopeless if they put the time into their love relationships and volunteerism. You matter when you give, just like the bee. What a great message that bee gave. If you give of yourself, you have purpose and are needed. If you just exist for yourself, ultimately you will feel your insignificance. So the answer to my 's question was "it is important for people to give of themselves to others and the Earth. Those actions of giving will lead to joy and finding oneness with Spirit. Reading about spirituality will not bring spirituality to you, you have to walk in it. It is an action to be spiritual, it is not passive. But in truth, I have no idea what people need, I just know what makes me feel whole."

I think if I have a soul, a spirit, I need spirituality to give sense to my life.
Spirituality has a broad meaning, I guess.

I too prefer the AA definition of God. We are all so different in physical make up and experience it seems to be the only way to be inclusive rather than exclusive in discussing something undefinable.

I could not survive without my spirituality. For me this is the feeling of connection to the energy that is present in everything that exists. It is something I feel and see on the minds eye (third eye to those who understand it this way). This works best for me because I am not one who just accepts what I am told and my ADD brain makes it difficult if not impossible to follow strict riles and procedures. I will deliver the results but not via a procedure that makes sense to many others.

"Need" spirituality?

I guess I can't say for sure. I think it depends on what one feels they need it "for". I know spirituality is vital to me personally, so in my case I'd call it a need. And I think it enhances everyone's life, but I guess whether an individual feels they need it or not, would depend on what their goals are and what they value out of life.

Nice blog and nice comments!

I don't think that it is a question of needing spirituality or not needing spirituality since it is already the major component our lives. Whether that is recognized or not makes no difference...it simply is.
You are correct. It is there whether anyone chooses to see it or not.

I liked that part too. Reminded me of some of the "hard questions" my daughters ask me and I struggle for the right answer. My oldest is 40 and she still asks these kinds of questions.

I've never seen this debate controversial or even heated, not really. Could you explain why you see this as controversial? What really makes you feel that way? Most of the time people are on the edge of their seat, totally engrossed and eager to hear more.
I have never seen as much animosity between people a that which is done in the name of religion. Read the history books. Yes, people usually do want to hear more about what I have to say in this area but mostly so they can judge me by their standards, tell me how wrong I am etc. The kinder ones simply "pray" for me becasue I have lost my way. Those who already understand are the best as we can share thoughts.

I have never understood how anyone copes with life without a belief in a higher power. It would be so depressing and negative to think humans were all there is.

As I said in another comment not believing there is something more to it than the human would be very depressing.

I think I need it, but I am in denial.

My Inner Child certainly craves it, but is always being beat down by my Inner Warrior.

Ah denial - often that is what gets us through.

Millions of us seem to, and appear to be content with life.
