Easter History Lesson Regardless of what we believe the spiritual significance of a particular holiday to be, the dates, times and even names usually have more history to their origin. My personal view of this is that it throughout history things are explained in a context that the society of the time understands. As society evolves this changes. Another thought. As society evolves perhaps our practice of combining things and coming up with holidays like President's Day, then celebrating them on the date to accommodate mainstream work / holiday schedules is not a new idea. Regardless of personal beliefs about what is celebrated and how we choose to celebrate we should take a few minutes to reflect on what each holiday signifies. The following explains how we arrived at the name of the Easter holiday and gives some insight into some of the symbols that we associate with it. As Christianity evolved and various societies developed their customs beliefs and practices were added to come up with a holidays that reminds us all of the cycle of death and rebirth and celebrate this fact in a manner that is meaningful to us. Wishing everyone a joyful and peaceful holiday no matter what you call it or how you choose to celebrate it. Spiritwoman ^i^ |

There are thousands of potential holidays in the world, some past and some present. But there are only 365 days for a culture to choose from. Some groups are always going to be stuck sharing a particular day with those of another culture celebrating something entirely different. Some Christians take offense when early history is pointed out about some of their special days or customs. But that's silly. In the case of Christianity, many traditions from other cultures were accepted into their holidays in an effort to help newcomers to the faith feel comfortable and welcome. That fact means that most of those older customs should be cause for all Christians to celebrate! GBU, Gavin

That should be easy - a Gavin points out there are many potential holidays. I know when I was in Germany they had a holiday of some sort weekly. I believe that we Americans celebrate less holidays than any other cultures. When we do have a holiday is is only a partial holiday since retail has gone 24/7. I'm all for more holidays. I think most people just accepted the bunnies and eggs becasue that is what we learn as symbols when we are young. Personally I never gave a thought to how this fit into religious context. They were simply cute and fun. So was the candy when I was a kid, an excuse to go somewhere and have fun as a teen and young adult and the time for family to gather when I grew up. Spiritwoman ^i^

I love the way Christians have of sublimating their bloody history....LOL....."In the case of Christianity, many traditions from other cultures were accepted into their holidays in an effort to help newcomers to the faith feel comfortable and welcome."........What really happened when the Romans were insisting everyone in Europe had to bow down to their God.......was not exactly what you imply here...about as benign as your odious and ubiquitous GBU ..... But you still don't get it. Christians aren't Christians because they are "good" people. They are Christians because they realize what horrid people they are, and can admit that they are not perfect. That's why they need to be Christians. It's their only chance at redemption. And even tho they become Christians, they are still imperfect. They still often make mistakes and often do cruel and savage things. That's not because they are Christians. It's because they are imperfect. You perfect people needn't worry about that I guess. And I can tell you're one of the "perfect" ones by your civil tone and lack of resentment. Always such a pleasure to hear from you. Thanks again, and GBU, Gavin

We creative types can always see the things others miss, Easter bunnies, unicorns etc. My son and I were talking about that yesterday. He has apiece of wood with all sorts of swirls and patterns in it. He and I are able to see all sorts of things while the one of my daughters who is all logic can't see anything but differences in colors and shading. I don't know about you but I am so glad we can see Easter Bunnies laying eggs. The world woould be very dull and bleak without this. Spiritwoman ^i^
