Looking for Logs

Sounds silly to many of you in other parts of the country but out here it is not an easy thing to find an entire log. At the lake yes, but out here in the canyon? Most of the vegetation is smaller and spindlier. If there are any logs they are sold or scooped up immediately.

The other day I figured out that one seasonal item I am missing is a Yule Log (not the kind you eat). On my drive through the 2 canyon roads that separate me from civilization I scouted things out but all I found was smaller brush. Nothing at the stores either as I wanted just a log, not something decorated or split for fire wood.

Today we ventured out in the other direction, heading for the near-by national park areas. I know you are not suppose to take things from them but…………. Chuck also suggested looking for some locals that might have firewood signs out.

Found one before we even got off the main highway and pulled in. What an amazing place. It is a sort of ranch owned by a young couple who are sort of a combination of earthy crunchies and true off the grid living. They have chickens, oranges, avocado orchards, horses including one with blue eyes, and plan to begin a pick your own produce area. They build things completely out of recycled materials. All sorts of treats for the eyes. Their sign advertised firewood, eggs, fruits and produce and said honk for assistance. We didn’t have to though. We drove down the driveway trying to figure out where the house, stand or whatever it was and found the woman of the house feeding the chickens. She greeted us with enthusiasm and had no difficulty understanding that I simply wanted 1 log for an art project. As she took me to see what we had we passed many of her husband’s projects, most of which could have been mine. Everything was made from natural and recycled materials.

I found a couple of pieces that were suitable. As we discussed what I was doing further she said she had more to show me and took me through the orchards to an amazing pile of wood that was set aside for doing something with other than burning it. I went crazy and easily found my “yule log”, and 3 other pieces for future projects. I had to tare myself away before I way over did it.

I was in heaven and ready to move in – although I am sure the last thing a working ranch needs is a great grandma. There will be many return trips in the future. I seem to have met some of the other local eccentrics who are the same kind of off center as I am and found a great resource for many of the things I use “off label” for my projects.

So the exploration of the area was a successful one. Glad you came home with your log.

My grandparent's friends made them a yule log every year for years. I had completely forgotten them until I read your blog. Thanks for the memories...

Yule logs?

What do you with them? I've heard of them, never really had one, or thought I needed to get one.

Anyway if you need another, come by my place...I'm "sawing logs" all the time!

Had your area in mind when I said I knew people who lived elsewhere would laugh. When we have a heavy rainy season here we do get all sorts of things that wash up on the beach. Last El Nino it was 3 motot homes.

I guess the best way to explain the current yule log is that it is a floral centerpiece made from a real log. Usually has candles and holiday greens or other plants as part of it. It is symbolic of way by gone days when Yule was during the coldest part of the year. Heating was essential for celebratory gatherings so they would find a log large enough to keep things going all day and night.

I never knew that, wow!~
All the shops here sell yule log cakes at Xmas time. Big fancy decorated cakes in the shape of logs. Have seen them since I was a child, never knew the significance.

I like the edible ones too, especially chocolate.
