I agree with this statement.

It is sad the ones I have known have not and may never change.

Yes there are people just like that and they can not see it is them; it is always the other person. They go as far to say that other people are stupid.

There are some who take their responsibilities too seriously and thus become the problem and not the solution to the problem.

Alfie...

I saw this on a daily basis when I worked in social services. One of my duties as manager was to listen to client complaints. Most of the time it was just as you describe it. Not their fault for taking advantage but rather the fault of anyone who called them on it. I had a canned talk I would give them about choices and consequences - a modification of the same one I used on my children. The main difference was that my children finally got it.

and I agree with the may never change part. Most will never change. Too frightening to accept the fact that they are responsible for themselves.

    Quoting LeafLight:
Not only is this true, but I have read extensively on this dynamic and there is compelling evidence that this isn't behavioral in the vast majority of circumstances. This is one reason it becomes next to impossible to reform many abusive people. If my memory serves me correctly, don't you have a background in the social sciences? If so, are you aware of the non-behavioral evidence? If you have anything to contribute generally I would be most interested in your commentary.
You are correct. Statistics show that most abusers never reform. However, some learn to understand and control their behavior. When I worked with DFS I was fortunate to have an open and honest discussion with a "reformed" child molester who was the leader of a support group for recovering molesters. I asked him honestly if it was possible to loose the sexual attraction to children. His honest answer was "no, but you can learn to control it". Same is true for addicts. Once an addict always an addict but recovery is learning to control the urges. Some are successful but the vast majority are not. AA estimates that the long term success rate for recovering alcoholics is less than 5%.

Sad but makes me appreciate and applaud the courage, effort and persistence those who do succeed. They are truly remarkable individuals and deserve our praise and admiration.

Unfortunately the American way these days. I am right and anyone who disagrees is stupid. What an ironic way to look at things. a truly stupid person does not have the intellectual ability to disagree and understand or explain why. When all else fails resort to name calling and let emotions take over.
