Why? Why do we humans have such a thing for cleaning? I spent the morning digging out my camping / emergency survival gear for my family get together at the lake next week. I had decided to "travel light" this year as Chuck is still recuperating and I will be loading, unloading and setting up myself. Didn't work as one or the other of the specifically requested something I was not going to take. One is taking her smaller car so has to limit. Another reminded me that she uses my camper kitchen set up for cooking and so on. Of course everything was covered with dust and cobwebs and stuff because it has been sitting for months. I took everything out washed it all off. As I was doing this I got to thinking. When I get home from a trip everything is dirty from living out in the dust and dirt. I sort it all, clean it and store it. If it is the end of the summer season I pack it in the back of the shed as I do not like to camp out when it is cold but want to have everything ready to go if we need emergency back up. So far so good on not needing emergency back up. Come warmer weather and the next camping season I drag everything out and clean it again, just to take it out to the dirt and get it covered with dust the first few hours. I guess the thought of "dirty" things, even if they are back woods gear is too much for our acquired sensibilities. In the meantime just look at my yard. Notice I washed the life jackets and floaties and draped them over the fence to dry. No really, why do I need to wash life jackets and floaties? The first (and only) thing we will do with them is use them in the water. Spiritwoman ^i^ |

I have a very large trailer which is my back up home but would love to have one of the mall ones like your casita. I have looked a some a couple of times but so far I always find something else to spend money on. Spiritwoman ^i^

I remember Mom always saying "It's not a sin to be poor -- but it's a sin to be dirty!" I generally blame all my idiosyncrasies on MOM! You can blame it on her too if you want. When I had a family we took many of the same kinds of trips in "Big Blue" our Ford van that my husband had modified as a camper. Lots of wonderful memories. Spiritwoman ^i^

I'm an incredible slob, due mainly to laziness. But I'm not saying I think that's a good thing. I just accept it. However, I do believe there's an up side. I think today we tend to be overly obsessed with sanitation in all things. I think we need to have a little dirt and bacteria in our lives in order to keep our tolerances up. GBU, Gavin

Views on this matter vary widely. I have known a couple of women who were fussy about cleanliness in the house, but their cars looked like rubbish tips. One of my previous GF's thought nothing of dropping coffee cups, tissues, and anything else on the floor of my Corolla. I once spent three hours cleaning the the back of a fridge and its surrounding area, and was told this didn't count as cleaning because it wasn't visible dirt. My inclination is to clean when it starts to bother me.

I do have plenty of mess around and like you it was far worse when I had kids and a job. I had my priorities - kitchen, bathrooms, clean bedding and vacuum up after the pets. The rest? It got done when it was a problem. Spiritwoman ^i^

I do that with some things. Others are in plastic bins and boxes but those all get dusty etc. I haven't tried that with the boating stuff though. Boat is a Zodiac (inflatable) that has a bag type covering but we have never been able to get it back into the bag! Spiritwoman ^i^

I would be inclined to treat an off road vehicle the same way. All we have for off road at the moment is a couple of dirt bikes. We do clean them sometimes though as part of the maintenance functions. Kids are fond of off riding the bikes in a near by river bed and have been known to come home with a bike that looks like some sort of swam creature. Had to clean that up a bit before it went in the garage or trailer. Spiritwoman ^i^

Good thought. It would be an interesting study to see how individuals perception of this vary. Spiritwoman ^i^

I can't stand it when there's 1 napkin that sticks out in the middle of the napkin holder. I never use a dish rag more than once. I got that tip from Mr. Monk. LOL Spiritwoman ^i^

I can't stand it when the pillows on the bed have the opening in the pillow case pointing to the outside.
