What Do You Call Him?

Maybe someone can answer a question someone brought up in a recent discussion.

When a married man has a lover other than his wife she is called a mistress.

If you reverse things and a married woman has another man as a lover what do you call him? Mister doesn't quite fit.

Hi Spirit: Interesting question. Lover boy becomes 'Co-Respondent' in the divorce.

'Mantor' may be a possible choice !!??

Man for the gender and 'tor' for the rest of this person's duites !!

Thanks for the laff, SpiritGirl - remember the origin of his laff is a serious question. Have a wonderful day.

I would hazard a guess at a Lothario.

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

I thought the same for Gigolo. See how hard it is to define this one? Double standard again for sure.

Ture, if it gets that far. In the meantime maybe he is just called the pool boy or mail man?

You've ID the good old double standard. Women are so not to be considered in this situation there isn't even a word for it.

Actually it started out as a serious question in a women's group. Never did find a truly appropriate descriptive word.

Don't the French ladies refer to them as "Paramours"?
They do. Paramour is a good word in this situation and it is gender neutral. I must have been stuck out here in the canyon too long as I never considered looking at other languages. There must be adequate terms in use in cultures with different sexual attitudes. (which is about any except for American)

Now two 2 of you have gone and done it. Bad Kid says that if I could find a cooperating male it would be a real hoot to introduce him as my mattress and watch people's reactions.

Lover is a good gender neutral marital status neutral word but as you pointed out they still use mistress as it is the name of a new TV series (actually not new as it has been on in the UK for 3 years) called mistresses. We really do need a new word.

I like "Her Stud". It would be fun (bad kid is out again) to introduce male companion as "my stud. As I was writing this I just realized that the word stud is almost the same as std. Wonder if that was done on purpose. Yup, bad kid is out and frolicking over this one.
