My Ride in a Police Car

Comments on my washing machine blog reminded me of yet another adventure in my Fiero.

The car was only about 3 months old. I was driving down a stretch of coast highway that has about 8 miles of open space. Beautiful but isolated. I was in my court clothes, good suit, pumps etc. As Fieros were prone to do, the engine died with no warning or symptoms. Fortunately the traffic was sparse and I was able to coast to the emergency lane. The engine was turning over but would not start. This was pre cell phone days but in my CB days so I was able to radio a base station to call the auto club but I waited a long time.

While waiting I managed to contact some of my truck driver friends on my radio. They were headed in the opposite direction but said they could stop and pick me up and take me to the next town. Great - but that meant I had to cross the freeway and climb over the center divider. Quite a feat in my business suit (skirt, not pants suit, and the trimmings. Just as I was about to do this a Highway Patrol car came by and spotted the disabled sports car and the overly dressed blond about to cross the freeway. .

I explained my situation. He freaked out that I would be talking to truck drivers and I get a lecture about the dangers etc. Time to shut up and not go into detail of them being friends, that I knew how to drive a truck myself and was dating a truck driver. He called for a tow truck. Back then there weren’t many flatbed tow trucks and my car could not be towed by the other kind. (turns out that it could but the towing company did not know this). It would be 2 hours before the right tow truck could get to me.

At this point the Highway Patrol Officer decided that he could not leave me there that long (I was talking to truck drivers and was going to cross the freeway on foot so who knows what trouble I might get into). All of this was before there were strict regulations for law enforcement transporting civilians. Although technically I wasn’t a civilian since this was in my CPS days but I decided it was best not to mention that either. He decided that I needed to go with him so I would be safe. I got to ride up front. We got to stop a few speeders and went to the local fire station for coffee and a break. When the tow truck was dispatched he drove me back to my car.

Then I got to ride in the tow truck into the nearest town.

Ah the adventures of life with a Fiero.

PS – tire problem still not completely solved – back to the tire store this PM

It might have been a good thing that you did not buy a Fiero they were prone to catching on fire and you might have ended up as a smore.

I had a Toyota that would stop for no reason. Once I was driving and as luck would have it, in the fast lane...it stopped! A semi was behind me, he got his rig into the median to avoid hitting me. He came up and asked why I stopped suddenly and in the fast lane...I told him, the car just does that sometime. I do not think he was very happy! My ex husband was in the passenger seat about to have a conniption fit!! I took it to the dealer, pulled into the service dept. and told the service writer what had happened. Would you believe, he shrugged his shoulders and said, it's a Toyota! We had 2 other Toyotas and they did not stop like that!

I later got rid of the car. One day I saw the car at a guy's house. He was standing by it. I pulled up and told him I used to own this car. (I knew him, used to cut his hair when I was a hairdresser). He asked me why the car would suddenly stop....lol...I told him what the guy at the Toyota garage said, it's a Toyota!

I saw the guy another time and he told me the car had caught fire and was completely lost.....

I actually saw a red one on the road last week. I still have mine. It's been off road for the past 7 years or so. I had planned on restoring it one of these days, then I had a boyfriend who was going to use it to build an electric car but neither happened. Maybe some day....

No real danger - just another of those annoyances that challenge us.

When we insist on living it on our own terms it sure does.

That they were but I was lucky not to have that problem. Then on a factory recall to fix the problem they practically rebuilt the whole thing for free. I had lots of problems but fortunately the fire issue was not one of them.

That is unusual for toyotas. We have had a couple over the years - never had a problem except for "poopie car". That was a very ancient, well used one all of the kids learned to drive on. I finally got rid of it when they all had cars of their own and it needed work. Sold it to a neighbor and he got it back on the road.

As you said, it didn't come about, but I'm still laughing at the mental picture of you...pencil skirt all scutched up, high heels...one leg over the highway divider, watching for rogue truck drivers...lol
You have the picture.
