Back to Civilization

I am happy to report that everyone survived the 4 days at the lake. It was on the cool side for this time of year (low 80’s day to high 50’s at night) but the weather and scenery were as amazing as usual. Can’t beat the isolation and privacy and having a lot of the family together. The extra 4 teens decided not to come which made things much easier.

The biggest disappointment? I spent most of the time doing physically active things and still did not lose any weight! Must be too many marshmallows. Or maybe the home made Mexican food. One of my daughters brought a friend who prepared an incredible carne asada along with made from scratch beans and rice, and 2 kinds of salsa. Pretty good fair for camping.

The new gear makes things much easier. I still have the Kamper Kitchen or as Chuck calls it “the Chuck Wagon” but the new propane stove I bought last year is so much better than my 25 year old one. . I also have a small, portable propane water heater, which will do up to 4 gal. at a time, a porta potty and tent to go with it. The new tents are so light weight and easy to set up. However, I get to sleep in the Exlporer with an air mattress covered with a layer of memory foam complete with sheets and a heavy quilt. All of the comforts of home – well almost. The water system was not working so we had to haul all of the water we needed up a very steep 50 ft boat ramp. More about the pump installation later.

Will be going back in a few weeks. I love it. If I could find a way to live there and still manage everything I would do it in a heartbeat as long as I had lots of visitors.

Looks like you had a real fun time. Be careful with the beans though. Whenever Ann serves beans I always ask her the same question. "Have you been?"

Alfie...

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

When I lived in California and Ohio, we used to camp most weekends. Found a wonderful State (in California) campground less than an hour away and it was FREE. In Ohio, we went to a campground, also free and less than an hour away. We had a pop up tent camper. Also took it on a trip back east (from north east Ohio) and camped all the way, for 2 weeks. A cheap trip that way!

Welcome back .

Nice photo and it appears that you and the clan had a great get-together at the Lake.

I love outings of this kind but S and the others in family are not the ones much for outdoors; so, I do the next best thing - I either go out with some friends or by myself.

Many thanks for sharing, SpiritGirl - have a wonderful day. & a KOC.

I'd love to be able to go on that sort of a break but I cant drive so it will never happen. I always loved camping when I was younger and I have always regretted that I didn't do more of it when I had the opportunity. Maudie would never consent to sleep in a tent so any possibility of hiring one for a weekend trip is out of the question, unless of course, I went alone.

I was away in Poland all last week and I didn't get to read or respond to any blogs until yesterday. Sam was born on September 27 in Dublin but the family moved to Sweden, Lisa's homeland in February.

We had already booked flights to Sweden in August but the recent trip was booked on an impulse only a week before we travelled.

I did a tremendous amount of walking in Poland and it didn't knock one iota of fat from my bulging belly, in fact I put on weight while I was there.
The drive to out lake property is the real challenge. About 150 miles on the highway then 20 miles over a private, minimally maintained dirt road. You'd love one of the traditions though - pop open the first beer as soon as we are on the private road, then keep it from splashing all over stuff while bounding around in 4 wheel drive!

Know what you mean by patience. I am in hopes of keeping up the physical activity as I have a few things that need doing here that will use plenty. Now if I can just keep my hands out of the cookie jar while doing it!

As far as I can remember you were slim and trim and a beautiful blond, so unless you have gained weight since I saw you a year ago, no need to loose weight, however I would stay away from the re-fried beans, for more reasons than one, lol
I'm still pretty much the same weight - but it is doing the usual age related migration! As for the beans - we were living "in the wild".

No worries - plenty of space and fresh air and I set the potty tent up very near my spot.

The back yard can be fun. When my in-laws lived in northern Ca. the family would all gather and camp out in their yard. They had a 5 acre place in the redwoods.

None of the public areas are free any longer out here. They even charge up to $20 per night just to park along the beach in some areas. Some end up being quite costly but when traveling with a large family as we both did it is still fat less expensive than putting them all in a motel and feeding their endless appetites at restaurants.

Too bad.I can imagine there are some pretty great places in the countryside in your country.

The spiritual part of me is always close to nature so I hope I never have to give it up.

It's alwasy fun if you like the outdoors. Unfortunately many in our age group no longer tolerate the discomforts so can't enjoy it. I am fortunate to have kids who take me along and help with the work.
