Foto Friday - Honoring Veterans

The pictures in my collage are photos I took of other photos– saved the scanning process and also makes them photos that I took myself. They are representative of my family’s military service. I do not have my favorite, my mom and dad’s wedding picture, both in uniform with me so I made do with those I found.

My family more or less portrays military service as most experience it – not specifically heroic but doing their part. None made a career of it or a great deal of fuss about their service or were at all political but each generation of my family did their bit.

My parents met while serving in the army air corps. My dad was recovering from a major injury. My mom was his nurse. I was conceived in order to keep them together. In those days the military was not very family friendly and once they learned of my parent’s marriage they shipped her off to another base. Since pregnant women and mothers did not serve back then she was discharged (honorably) once I was under production. Unfortunately once they were both back in civilian life their marriage did not last. They were just 2 different people. In recent years I asked my mom about why they married in the first place since they really had nothing in common. She told me “We were young. There was a war on and we were both in the army. You didn’t consider a future then. We didn’t know if we would even be alive the next day”. Made sense to me.

Collage pictures:
Starting at the top left – my husband – Vietnam era.
Top middle – my grandfather’s WWI medals
Top left – my grandfather in his WWI uniform.
Bottom right – My mother - WWII
Bottom middle – my army brat grand wearing her dad’s cap. Taken while he was stationed in Germany waiting for his deployment to Kosovo.
Bottom right – My dad, a WWII veteran taken at the local American Legion on his last veteran’s day. The Navy cap is courtesy of one of his closest friends who was a career sailor.

A great collage and I can see that you are one with passion for the country and freedom in your genes.

My compliments . Having been a soldier all pre-superannuation life, I admire this family.

Have a wonderful weekend, My Friend.
