Searching For A Heart of Gold

Heart Of Gold"

I want to live,
I want to give
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold.
It's these expressions
I never give
That keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean
for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind,
it's such a fine line
That keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.
Keeps me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old.

Keep me searching
for a heart of gold
You keep me searching
for a heart of gold
And I'm growing old.
I've been a miner
for a heart of gold.

I heard this old Neil Diamond song today. Took me back to when I was about 25 and felt like I was really “getting old”. I kept searching – no heart of gold until I was around 40. Then I found one and was with the "heart of gold" until death literally did us part.

Looking back at it all from my current vantage point I see it all quite differently. There were and are many, many "hearts of gold" but most of them got overlooked for human frailties. Having a “heart of gold” does not equate to compatibility or even attraction. Nonetheless I am extremely fortunate to now be surrounded by "hearts of gold"

These days I am much more concerned about doing my best to be a "heart of gold" than finding one. I'd like to think that this is part of the wisdom of being old rather than getting old.

In the old days, my first album was by Neil Diamond. Solitary Man "Melinda was mine til the time that I saw her, hold'n Jim, love'n him.." and "Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon" were my favorites. one of his little known written songs is below and was also on that album. Since that time it has been done over and over by different artists. Which is the true award for great writing. Now, it keeps playing in my head.

Written by: Neil Diamond

Red, red wine
Go to my head
Make me forget that I
Still need her so

Red, red wine
It's up to you
All I can do, I've done
But memories won't go
No, memories won't go

I'd have sworn
That with time
Thoughts of you
Would leave my head
I was wrong
And I find
Just one thing
Makes me forget

Red, red wine
Stay close to me
Don't let me be alone
It's tearing apart
My blue, blue heart
