How Much Fish Can One Person Take

When you live on the Gulf Coast and you can just walk out your back door and drop a line in the water any time you want to; you would think that would fill your need to be around or have fish right?

Well, guess again. I like fish, I like catching them the most but which I seem to do the least of; but not from a lack of trying. I may not catch a lot of fish but I sure drown a lot of worms.

Next to catching fish I like to watch ‘em swim around in an aquarium. So not long ago I bought one. It’s only about a 20 gallon tank but its oval in shape so it is a deep tank, about 22 inches from top to bottom.

I’ve had a fish tank before and learned there was a process you had to go through preparing the water with some chemicals that you need to eat up all the bad stuff that could be in the water and might be harmful to the fish. The process I was told about back then took about two weeks before the tank was ready for fish.

Finally the day came I though the tank was ready so I hustled down to a Pets Mart and bought some fish. I like a lot of color so I got some red something or other with black tails; some fat fish that are sorta orange, gold and silver and then I got some Black Mollies. I didn’t know this but Mollies come in different colors so I got a couple of gold ones too. I also got my little center piece for the tank so the fish have a place to hide. Fish like to hide, don’t ya know?

I get home with all the stuff and the fish and I let the fish float around in the water for awhile in the plastic container I brought ‘em home in so they can adjust to the temperature of the water in the tank. After about 15 minutes I turn loose. They all take off in different directions check out their new digs. Most probably they are looking for a way out. While they are checking things out I drop in a little food since I have no idea when they were last fed and that seems to slow down the searching for a way out while the concentrate on grabbing all the food they can before it’s all gone.

While I’m watchin’ em swim around and chasing the food, I notice that one of the Gold Mollies looks…….no she is pregnant! I’m gonna be a grandpa again. The problem is I don’t know what to do with a pregnant fish. I know that fish eat their young and I don’t want that to happen.

So off I go again back to Pets Smart. The sales lady sells me one of these little net traps that I can isolate the mother to be from the rest of the fish and hopefully I’ll be there when she starts delivering the babies and I can get em out of there before she eats em. Back to the house I go and get the little pen all set up a situation in the aquarium and manage to round up the expectant mother without too much trouble and deposit her in the isolation ward. She ain’t happy. I can tell she feels like something bad is gonna happen to her and as I set there watching her she comes up to the side of the aquarium with these great big eyes and I can see her little mouth moving as if she is saying, “Why did you do this to me? Please let me out? I tried to explain it to her but I can tell she ain’t buyin’ it. But what else can I do?

After a couple of days of watchin her mope around in that isolation net and not eating, I go back to Pets Mart to consult with the experts. They don’t have any answers except one; put the male in the isolation pen with her. So back to the house I go and snare the male Gold Mollie and put him in isolation with the female. It does seem to settle the female down some and she begins to move around a little more and she starts eating again.
Now I know that fish was pregnant when I bought her. That was about a month ago now and she still ain’t dropped those guppies yet! The male is still there and he keeps tryin to put the make on her but she ain’t having none of that!! But that doesn’t stop him from tryin; he seems to be one horny little devil.

My question is how long is she gonna carry those babies before she delivers? I’m getting kinda tried of spend all my time watchin to see if her water broke yet? Do fish’s water break? And if they do how would I know.

wow, It doesn't seem like she should take that long to have those babies, does she still look pregnant? I think txlady is right, google gestation of fish. You should be able to find how much longer you have to wait. Good luck...PS I love the gulf, usually vacation in Navarre area.

Too funny. Now that you have all my cats attention here, they want me to go out and buy them an aquarium. I can just see them staring at it for hours on end.

LOL what a delightful blog. first time ever I didn't have to decipher any hidden meaning to it.

anyway I love fish. eating them...raw or cooked fresh is best. delish. now about those mollys, I didn't know there were other colors. cos my dad used to have a pond with black mollies in it. one day the help drained the water to clean it...he forgot to take the fish out.

anyway I have no idea about pregnant fishies...I do know about caring for baby lovebirds. wanna switch the fish for a bird? LOL

have fun! it's twice the fun raising them from babies then just taking on an adult. hmm....sounds like kids. well seniors are those.

thanks for sharing and good luck with the molly.

ps try googling 'mollies giving birth' and you get a you tube video of several of mollies squishing babies out and instantly swimming. voila! LOL
