Guilty by popular demand

Commentary by,

Freedom F. Perkins

Just where to start, I have had some thing that has bothered me for quit some time now. I don't know what to think about us Americans. We say we want what America has to offer, but we don't. You say that I'm talking in circles, not really, but you all are {maybe not all} and it is time that you stopped to think what it is that we really want here in this wondrous country of ours.

I know you are saying 'gee Fred get to the point', before I tell you all what is bugging me I want you to understand this from where I sit. I as did many others spent my youth, young adult and into middle age in the Military of this nation. We that gave so to speak at the office have a different view of things some times. We think that our nation is far from perfect, but it is the second best choice.

We have the Congress they make the laws, this is one division. The second is the boss that is the President, and the third division is the folks that interpret the laws of this nation the Supreme court. That is it just three count them THREE. No place does it say news papers, TV station News reports, radio, news reports, or gossip.

We have come to think that that we get at 5:00 PM news is gospel. I hate to tell you but all the different methods of getting out the news is slanted if for no other reason then it is people that put out the news. OJ Simpson was found guilty (of killing ex-wife) in the news media. In court he was not found guilty, yet I hear often that he is guilty and we know that he is, or he got away with it. What a sad state of affairs we have come to. We didn't sit on the jury, we didn't have all the evidence made available to us, we didn't even sit in the court room for the full length of the trail and yet so many of you {not me } still say that he done it. For me if a man is found guilty then he is guilty and if he has not been found guilty then he isn't. "Just because you say it, doesn't make it so".

I will give you all another example. The Peterson case on the west coast, You all have made up your minds as to weather you think he is guilty or not. If you told me that you think that he is a slime bag I would most likely agree with you but is he guilty I don't know yet and neither do you but the press wants you to think that he is guilty. Wait for the jury to come in and then support the finding of the jury. Please listen to me "if we don't go with what the court has set down then we will one day let the News media determine the guilt or innocents of a person and that might not be to bad until it is you or your loved one" I some times wonder if in fact we haven't let the news media go to far, but just as I support the findings of our courts I also support the right of the news media to report the truth.

Tom,

I read your comment and agree with what you said, not to argue but to discuss the two trails that you refer to are very different.

The first trail was a criminal trail with much stricter rules (real evidence) about evidence. The civil trail only required a preponderance of the evidence making it much easier for plaintive to prove their case.

I also feel that a criminal trail and a civil trail appear to be double jeopardy to me. If he had been found guilty in the criminal trail then I would have no problem with the civil trail as this was a proving hurt and could be compensated, again this is my opinion only and your response was very good, you get a thumbs up from me

People will believe what they want to believe...no matter what they hear, or where they hear it.

We live in an age when gossip and finger-pointing judgement are more important than truth and honesty. the news media are making millions out of spreading "news" that is no more than gossip and conjecture. It's a vicious circle, with the readers feeding them they will keep on providing more and more crap. "Who cares if it's true, it's more interesting than boring old politics" seems to be the attitude.

Then, when all the lies and gossip clouds the serious issues of real life, and make it impossible to reach the real truth, everyone blames the media and shout "It's the press/media, they are the guilty ones!"

In reality, they are only filling a sales driven demand, they know sensation is what sells to the masses, so the feeding frenzy goes on...despite the wholesale death and destruction it all causes to human lives etc.

Without demand there would be no supply.

Whether OJ Simpson was guilty or not, is not the problem...the real problem is the obscuring of truth that leaves the machine of "Justice for all" in a position where it cannot dispense justice for all. That is a dangerous predicament for all of us.

How many innocent men have to go to prison...and how many dangerous men be allowed to walk among us, before we wake up and do somjething about it?

That's what it comes down to.
